Review Notes for Mid Terms for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades

Dear Parents,
Before vacation your child received his/her progress report. This is just a note to clarify regarding your child's speaking/listening grade. Although nothing is listed on either progress report (or report card) in this area, please be aware that it is covered in class and grades are listed as speech... on SIS and are in the composition/writing area. Since a speaking topic is used as a lead in to each writing assignment, it IS COUNTED as part of their composition/writing grade and does affect their total grade in this area. Please realize also that composition writing differs from penmanship writing. Children should prepare for speaking activities by preparing a brief outline on a 3 by 5 index cards which will also be used to organize their ideas for their writing assignment.
To prepare for Midterm Exams which will begin shortly after we return to school, it is necessary that all students visit the following websites listed below:
For Religion, see http://www.sadlierreligion.com/
For Language Arts, see www.eduplace.com/kids/hme
On the Religion website, click on We Believe with Project Disciple, followed by choosing grade, student, and activities category. Students should then print out FLIP CARDS found in drop down menu under Activities for Unit 1 and Unit 2. Students should cut out the words and definitions and glue them on index cards with word on one side and definition on the other.
Students should place these in plastic sandwich bags to use for review. Students should also click on area marked Study Guides for mini review test on each chapter 1 to 5. Students may also wish to practice on the other activities provided such as crossword puzzles, lives of saints, etc.
On the Language Arts website, click on Grammar Blast, to review the following:
2nd grade - Unit 1, Unit 3, Unit 5, Cummulative Review, Unit 9
3rd grade - Unit 1, Unit 2, Cummulative Review, Unit 3, Unit 5
4th grade - Unit 1, Unit 2, Cummulative Review, Unit 3, Unit 4, Cummulative Review, Unit 5.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, 4th Grades 11/1 to 11/5

Dear Parents,
This week the topic of spontaneous prayer (listed in guidelines) will be discussed with all three classes. Although all students have certain prayers they need to memorize, it is also important for students to understand the value of creating a personal prayer of their own. This prayer can be one of praise, thanks, or petition. For example, in a prayer of petition a child could ask God's help for a relative, the poor, or a personal need. For an assignment this Tuesday, I am asking each student to create a spontaneous prayer (praise, thanks, or petition) of three sentences on ONE intention on a 3 by 5 inch index card. Be sure student includes name and grade. The card will be be folded in four and placed in a prayer basket. Each day one card will be chosen and that student will share his intention aloud with the class as our daily prayer at the beginning of each Religion lesson throughout the month of November. With the holy season of Thanksgiving and Christmas upon us, this is the perfect time to introduce this important type of prayer to the students -- making it a personal way to gather for prayer. The prayer should be created solely by the child but can be discussed at home. We will be continuing this in class by having students write spontaneous prayers for before and/or after sacraments, for Stations of the Cross. for Mysteries of the Rosary, etc. This will also help 3rd and 4th graders who are often asked to create a spontaneous prayer on their archdiocesan examination!

You will notice that on the weekly blog "first quarter Word Wall test" is scheduled for this Thursday since there is 12:00 dismissal on Friday. This means that students need to review ALL the vocabulary definitions given since Sept. (seven weeks of words) for the cummulative exam. No new definitions will be given this week so students can begin reviewing immediately.

Lastly, please be aware that penmanship grades will be given based on work done on weekly Spelling tests so please have your child practice handwriting skills (script in 3rd & 4 th) as they review their spelling words. Spelling word script samples are in the Spelling textbook.

Please look below your child's grade for this week's homework:

Dear Parents,
This Thurs., Oct 21, I will be away at another school attending a Religion workshop from 8:30 to 12:30. Last Friday's vocabulary will also need to rescheduled for this week. Test papers will be sent home in a folder next week and each test will need to be signed and returned to me in the same folder. The test in this folder are only for tests given by me and should not be confused with tests given by any other teacher.

The vocabulary words for this week are in the area of Language Arts:

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for 10/11 to 10/15

Dear Parents,
Please make sure all students are prepared with three sharpened pencils and a good eraser for the ITBS and COGAT test this week and please note 11:30 dismissal this Friday. I will be giving the tests to the third grade.
Regarding Progress Reports distributed last week, please be aware that although the Speaking/ Listening area is covered and marks recorded for all grades, this area is INCLUDED as part of the Writing/Composition mark which then counts for 40% of their total grade. Therefore, I use speaking/listening activities as a lead-in to composition writing. When students are asked to prepare an outline for a speaking assignment, it should be very brief so that students speak (not read) about their topic. A sample of a 4th grade outline would list main ideas in this way:
Topic: my birthday party
A, foods served
B. games and activities
C gifts received
All students should also think of an attention getting introduction and a suitable conclusion for their speech. Listening grades for example may be based on how they answer who, what, where, when questions on the stories presented. Students will then use their outline to write their compositions in class giving details for each main idea so they can complete three paragraphs. In the case of third grade, it would be two paragraphs and in the case of second grade it would be one paragraph. I will often be covering non-fiction themes as well since these are often ones presented on state tests.

Below are the vocabulary definitions for this week in Religion:
* conscience - ability to know the difference between good and evil or right and wrong
* parable - a short story told by Jesus that has a message
* miracle - amazing event performed by Jesus that is beyond human power
* sacrament - special sign given to us by Jesus by which we share God's life and love
* worship - to give God thanks and praise

Dear Parents,
Please check your child's LA notebook for last week's homework corrections and if possible review with them to avoid repeating the same type of errors. Please do not have your child erase or redo work already corrected; just review errors so that work improves over time. We will be adding the aim to each classwork entry so you can see what we are working on each week.
Book sale ads will be sent home this week for the upcoming week-long event. Please choose ahead of time what your child wishes to buy and have the correct amount available if possible to make it easier especially for the younger ones.

Below are the vocabulary definitions for this week which are in the areas of Language Arts. Parents please be aware that your child should have fifteen definitions listed each week (five given by each teacher). If child is absent or work is incomplete, student must get these from the blog by clicking on the teacher's name and searching where the weekly homework assignment is listed. Remember that tests are given each Friday on these definitions!

*subject - who or what the sentence is about.
Eg. The little gray cat is playing.
*predicate - tells what the subject is or does.
Eg. Tom rode his new bike.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, 4th for 9/27 to 10/1

Dear Parents,
This week I will be checking notebooks (including 2nd grade vocabulary notebooks) to make certain that all students have finished taking their notes and doing weekly classwork. A classwork grade will be given based on completed work! For example all students are required to have fifteen definitions in their vocabulary notebook each week to study for tests on Fridays. Students are given time in each teacher's class each week to write these in their notebooks. If not completed in class on Mondays, they need to find the definitions on line listed in each teacher's blog and have them in their notebooks by Tuesday morning. This should also be done in case students are absent on Mondays when definitions are given. In Religion I am usually giving notes one day a week so students have a chance to catch up before Friday in case they need more time. If a student is absent for an oral test (one that I dictate done on looseleaf), it will not be made up. Student will be excused for that one test but student should review the work missed since it may appear on the mid-term or final exam. Parents please make sure that your children are studying the definitions in their vocabulary notebooks each week for test on Fridays especially in second grade!

Below are the vocabulary definitions for this week in the area of Religion:
*Kingdom of God - the power of God's love active in the world
*Resurrection - Jesus being raised from the dead
*Pentecost - the day the Holy Spirit came to give courage to the apostles. Pentecost is also called the birthday of the Church

Homework for 2nd, 3rd & 4th Grades 9/13-17

Dear Parents,

All parents should have returned emergency cards and all other forms by last Friday, so if you have not yet done so please make sure they are sent in by tomorrow. If you have lost the forms please contact the office. All students should have all their supplies by this Monday and all books must be covered by the end of the week.

Below are the vocabulary definitions for Religion for this week. These along with the definitions from the 3rd and 4th grade teachers must be copied into their VOCABULARY notebooks so that in total there are fifteen definitions from different subject areas to be studied each week. A vocabulary test is given every Friday. The words are the same for all three classes.

Blessed Trinity - three persons in one God: God, Jesus, Holy Spirit

Holy Family - family of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus

Savior - title given to Jesus because he died to save us

Incarnation - the truth that the Son of God became man

Church - community of people who are baptized and follow Jesus

Homework for Language Arts and Religion will only be given only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tests most often will be given in those subjects on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Please check under your grade to view this week's homework.

STUDENTS SHOULD NOT WRITE IN VOYAGES (LANGUAGE ARTS) WORKBOOK. WORK SHOULD BE DONE IN LANGUAGE ARTS NOTEBOOK. A HEADING SHOULD NOT BE USED ON NOTEBOOK PAGES. THE HEADING SHOULD BE Language Arts p. _ and the date OR Spelling p. _ and the date AND BOTH SUBJECTS GO IN THE SAME NOTEBOOK. STUDENTS MAY WRITE IN THEIR RELIGION BOOKS. THERE WILL NOT BE ANY RELIGION WORKBOOKS THIS YEAR.

In total all students should have seven notebooks and seven plastic folders as described in the supply list posted on this blog.
To simplify matters regarding notebooks and folders I would suggest color coding these items.
For example for my home room, the 2nd grade, I will be placing colored circles on all their notebooks and folders as follows:
*Red circles marked LA and REL are for Ms. Saville's classes:Language Arts and Religion
*Blue circles marked RD and SS are for Ms. Bagley's classes: Reading and Social Studies
*Yellow circles marked M and SC are for Mr. Badia's classes: Math and Science.
ONLY ONE VOCABULARY NOTEBOOK IS NEEDED and it will have an orange circle marked V.

**** IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOUR STUDENTS HAVE ALL THE NOTEBOOKS AND FOLDERS THEY NEED THIS WEEK. Several students are writing on looseleaf or even in the incorrect notebook because they don't have one notebook for each subject (except Penmanship) as they should. All the notes and work they are doing on looseleaf or in an incorrect place will need to be rewritten in the correct notebook which makes extra work for your child. I need your cooperatiion in order for your children to make a smooth start that will continue throughout the year once a pattern is set up that they can follow. I will only be labeling notebooks and folders for my home room which is the second grade, but third and fourth may follow the system if they wish.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, 4th Grades for 6/7 - 6/11

Dear Parents,
On Monday I will be sending home permission slips that you filled out at the beginning of the year to be used for our field day trip on June 18th. This year we will going nearby to Inwood Park instead of Riverbank State Park. On next week's homework blog I will be explaining about preparations and regulations for the trip. I need a parent to sign the top of the permission with the current date and please return by Tuesday. If your address or phone has changed please cross out one listed and write your new one somewhere on the sheet. Please do not lose this slip sinc I cannot provide more copies.
This Wed. June 9 all students will be taking the Religion Final Exam (for 3rd and 4th it will be the Archdiocesean Exam). Students in ALL classes have a list of vocabulary definitions and a list of what is most important to review in answering essays. This should be helpful in knowing exactly what parts of the notebook needs most attention (eg. 4th should concentrate on the paragraphs written for each of the ten commandments; 3rd and 2nd on the parables and anything else listed in the notebook for review). On Thurs. June 10 all students will be taking a short Handwriting Exam in script. There will be no school this Friday.
I will not be assigning any other homework this week in order to give students every opportunity to study well for ALL their exams but please make sure that your children are doing so. I will be assigning review pages to be done in class that should be checked out at home as well. Thank you.
