They are NOT responsible for
"correcting" the homework. I do expect students to review their corrected work and try to show improvement but grades are based on what each student is able to do.

Dear Parents,
Class 2-1 should wear their gym clothes this Tues., Oct. 18!
You may notice that last week's lesson plans were altered due to many changes that occured during the week.  Several lessons have been rescheduled for this week.  ITBS testing will continue all week. Once again homework and other testing will not be given until ITBS is over (except for the weekly vocabulary Word Wall test and speech preparation on their Religion theme). Please have students review vocabulary definitions DAILY each week.  Progress Reports will be sent home this Monday.  A grade of 70.00 indicates that a student is failing in that particular area.
This week I will be grading speeches from ALL classes on their assigned Religion project theme.  Students may use an index card for an OUTLINE ONLY of their speech and present some of the pictures they brought in. Small pictures (less than @ 5"x 6")  cannot be used. All pictures will be returned on Monday so students can prepare.  This is in preparation for our Religion Fair in November.

Preparation for Religion Fair for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Graders

Dear Parents,
By now, every student in each class has chosen or been assigned (including both second grades) a topic to research  for the Religion Fair in November.   Each second grader will be working on a different saint. Third graders will work on the sacraments.  Each fourth grader will work on explaining a different commandment or beatitude.  By Sept. 30th, each student must find and print out 10 to 12  pictures related to their topic and bring them in a plastic bag labeled with student's name and grade. All pictures should be in color and about the size of half a sheet of looseleaf but not smaller.  The display boards that the principal will be ordering are half the size of the ones used last year and these are the ones that will be needed for the Religion Fair. PLEASE DO NOT BUY A DIFFERENT ONE YET SINCE IT MAY NOT BE APPROPRIATE.   TO FIND PICTURES ENTER IN ADDRESS BAR http://www.googleimages,com/. AND PRINT IN NAME OF TOPIC OR INFORMATION RELATED TO TOPIC.  Print out a VARIETY of pictures. (See below for specific directions to each grade level.)
SECOND GRADERS should enter the complete name of their saint on http://www.googleimage,com/.
Most of the saints' names were taken from the saint archive list on http://www.sadlierreligion.com/ but some were not.  Find and print out a variety of pictures related to the saint: real images, statues, paintings, stained glass window images, mosaics,  church and school named after the saint, medals, prayers or litanies, novenas, etc.
THIRD GRADERS should enter the name of their sacrament on http://www.googleimages.com/.
Find and print out a variety of pictures related to their sacrament: different ways of receiving the sacrament (old vs. modern and in different religions if applicable), people present, special garments worn, symbols, certificates, etc.
FOURTH GRADERS who have been assigned a beatitude should look on p. 35 of their Religion book for help in understanding its meaning and how it applies to them. Those assigned a commandment should locate information on theirs in Chapters 9 through 23 in their Religion book and read the Chapter carefully highlighting what is important as we do in class.  Students should then enter the name or key words such as "poor in spirit " on http://www.googleimages.com/  and find pictures showing how people display in their behavior that they choose to live that specific beatitude or commandment. This may include Jesus, people today, or people from the past, such as Martin Luther King.
      FOLLOWUP;
Instructions in doing SPEECH and WRITING assignments related to their topic will be given in the upcoming weeks.  Please wait for instructions in these.  Please do not try to have students complete these ahead of time or they will probably have to redo their work.  These assignments will be counting as grades for  BOTH subject areas (Religion and ELA.)
Thank you for your attention in this matter.                       Ms. Saville

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, 4th Graders 9/12 to 9/16

Dear Parents,
Welcome! If you are a parent of any second graders 2-1 or 2-2, please be sure to click on my previous post Message to Second Graders...  for directions and guidance with notebook setup, etc. The following information contains messages for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. This Mon., Sept. 12, ALL students will be copying their  vocabulary definitions from all four teachers in ONE vocabulary notebook, so it is important that every student have their notebook labeled VOCABULARY (or color coded with orange circle) in class. Students should NOT record these weekly definitions in any other notebook. The weekly vocabulary definitions will be the SAME for all grades. Parents may click on each teacher's blog to see their weekly definitions posted.
The vocabulary definitions for this week are in Religion and listed below:

*Blessed Trinity - three persons in one God: God as creator, Jesus as Savior, Holy Spirit as helper
*Holy Family - family of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus
*Savior - title given to Jesus because he died to save us
*Incarnation - the truth that the Son of God, Jesus, became man

ALL grades will be participating in a Religion Fair on November 8th. Second graders will be preparing display boards with pictures including composition work on different saints. Third graders will  work on the different sacraments. Fourth graders will work on the ten commandments and the Beatitudes. Students in 3rd and 4th graders have already chosen their specific topics, and this week second graders will choose their favorite saint (each must be different).  Students may begin to look for pictures and print out color pictures on http://www.googleimages.com/  and bring in a plastic bag for revision and discussion but no Composition work should be done at home and nothing should be put on a display board yet until it is approved.

The homework for each grade is listed below. Please make certain you are checking under YOUR child's grade. Remember that Religion and ELA homework will be given ONLY on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Message to Second Graders about Homework 9/7/2011

Dear Parents,
In an effort to help second graders to adjust to the departmental classes, I am giving parents and students a look ahead on how work will be organized. THIS APPLIES ONLY TO SECOND GRADERS. Please read carefully.
Second graders will have their notebooks color coded so it is important that all notebooks needed for each teacher are all in class no later than this Monday, Sept. 12. The set up is as follows:
*red - Religion - Ms. Saville
*yellow - Social Studies and Science - Ms. Sanchez
*blue - Math - Mr. Badia
*green - Reading and ELA - Ms. Bagley
*orange - Vocabulary - This one notebook is to be used by ALL teachers to record 16 words (with definition) that will be assigned each week: four words from each teacher. These must be written out and studied for a test each Friday, starting this Friday, Sept. 16. Parents may also check for these on each teacher's homework blog each week.
Starting next week students will be assigned only TWO subjects for homework each day in an effort not to overwhelm them and only the books needed for that night's homework should be taken home each day.
*Mon. - Math (Mr. Badia) and Reading (Ms. Bagley)
*Tues. - Religion (Ms. Saville) and Social Studies (Ms. Sanchez)
*Wed. - Math (Mr. Badia) and ELA (Ms. Bagley)
*Thurs. - Religion (Ms. Saville) and Science (Ms. Sachez)
*Fri. - NO HOMEWORK! Parents MAY CHOOSE to use Friday to catch up on any work missed or for review or practice in any subject in which the student may be having difficulty.
Tests in each subject will usually be given the day following the day homework is assigned in that subject.
Parents are asked to please cover books as they are being sent home and write or label ONLY with student's full name, grade (2-1 or 2-2) and SUBJECT (not name of book).  You may use brown paper, cellophane, stretchable covers, etc. Notebooks should be covered. Do not keep the books or notebooks at home as they will be needed in class every day.
Parents please remember that the TWO emergency cards (both sides filled in) and first seven sheets (each requiring your signature) are due by this Friday, Sept. 9th.This Monday GYM classes will begin for all second graders so classes 2-1 and 2-2 should come dressed in their gym clothes.
I hope this has been helpful. Thank you for your attention in this matter.
Ms. Saville

Important Notices for 2nd, 3rd, 4th Graders 6/20 to 6/24

Dear Parents,
It's time to say farewell -- till next year! Best wishes to my fourth graders as they move UP and onward toward graduation. I'll miss you, especially since I've known some of you since kindergarten! If no changes arise, I will be teaching Religion again to all three grades and Language Arts to third and fourth grades.
All students should bring their book bags Mon. through Thurs. this week and I will inform students which books and materials should be left at home during the week. Both test folders and composition folders will be sent home on Thursday. I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT ALL GRADES KEEP THEIR COMPOSITION WRITING PORTFOLIOS AND RELIGION NOTEBOOKS IN A SAFE PLACE AT HOME. DO NOT DISPOSE OF THEM AS THEY MAY PROVE TO COME IN USEFUL!
I will be sending home thank you notes to all the parents involved in planning my birthday party (or who sent a gift). It was a beautiful surprise and I appreciate your thoughtfulness very much!
Our homeroom second grade end of the year party will be this Wed. in the afternoon. I'm asking each second grader to bring in $1.50 for a pizza slice and treats ($2.50 if you wish two slices). Each student should bring their own juice -no big bottles. Students may wear dress up clothes on Wed. for the party but MUST BE in school uniform for our eighth grade Graduation Mass on Thurs. at 9:00. Report cards, honor certificates, and subject awards will be distributed at the 10:00 assembly in the auditorium on Fri., June 24th. Dismissal will be right after the assembly, about 11:00, from the auditorium, and summer vacation begins.
I want to thank every parent and student for your cooperation and support this year and I'm looking forward to seeing all of you soon! Have a great vacation! Love,
Ms. Saville
