Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for 4/16 to 4/20

Dear Parents,
WELCOME BACK!  Please have all students bring back any books or notebooks taken home during Easter vacation.  This week the FOURTH grade only will be taking the NYS English Language Arts Test on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. mornings. Hopefully students have reviewed well all former tests on the web site I provided on my Easter break blog.  The ELA Workbook pages assigned for homework to third and fourth before vacation will be checked this week.  The same vocabulary definitions assigned before vacation should be reviewed for the test this Friday.
For ELA the new Unit 5 theme for the Core Curriculum focuses on Science so I am arranging for third and fourth graders to do research on the solar system.  Although books from the Core Curriculum theme will be provided for use by students in class, students will be required to prepare for speeches by looking up additional information on line (or in reference books). EACH STUDENT IN THIRD will be assigned ONE of the  PLANETS to research and report on.  Each student will need to prepare an outline that answers the questions: what, which, where, why, and how based on information on that planet. Students will also make a model or bring in print out pictures to use in their presentation.  EACH STUDENT IN FOURTH will be assigned ONE of the  CONSTELLATIONS to research and will be required to report on the mythology associated with that particular star group. and bring in a print out or created picture of their constellations.
This assignment will not be due till Thurs., April 26 th so I have time to prepare students in class by discussing using sample books, on line activities, presenting related vocabulary, etc.
Students in SECOND, THIRD, AND FOURTH will need review the sheet(s) of Religion notes given to each class before vacation.  The last  Religion review test on definitions and essays previously given  will  be reviewed in class and students will be retested  with similar question in preparation for final exams.
PLEASE READ ALL INFORMATION ABOVE CAREFULLY TO SEE HOW TO PREPARE  YOURSELF THIS WEEK!                                           Thank you

Easter Break Homework for 2nd, 3rd, 4th: 4/2 to 4/6

Dear Parents,
As I mentioned to fourth grade students, it is very important that students review for the NY Language Arts Test since it is scheduled as soon as students return after the Easter break.  As I also mentioned to students and several parents during parent-teacher conferences, the best way to prepare is to practice on  the Grade 4 English Language Arts Tests from 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007....  These can be printed out on www.nysedregents.org/Grade4/EnglishLanguageArts/home.html  If you have trouble you can also google:  New York State Language Arts Tests Grade 4.  Students should do Books 1, 2, and 3. The story questions in Book 2 refer to the story found in the "Listening Selection." Please check answers on the answer key found in "Scoring Key.  Grades 3 and 4 should also both review the "Writer's Resources" section on uses of capitalization and punctuation in the back of their Spellers as well as the graphic organizers in the back of  ELA Workbooks.
On Friday, March 30, I sent home a typed sheet of Religion notes to all students in grades 2-1, grade 2-2, and  grade 3. This sheet had a set of Religion terms and a set of essay questions for students to look up and study. Grade 4 had received three sheets previously: two sheets of review and one with a set of ten essay questions.  Students should look up and  practiceWRITING out the answers.
The ELA homework assigned for last Thursday will be checked on Wed., April 18th. For 3rd grade,  the assignemnt  was to answer ELA Workbook  pp. 103, 104, and 116.  For 4th grade, the assignment was ELA Workbook pp 106, 112. 113.  Since the weekly vocabulary test was not given before vacation, students should review the same defintions for the week after the Easter break.
             HAVE A BLESSED EASTER!
