Homework for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for May 2

Dear Parents,                                                                                                              UPDATED
        Congratulations to our First Communion class who will be celebrating the sacrament this Sunday at 1:00!  Due to the Math State Test this week NO OTHER HOMEWORK SHOULD BE DONE  until the test is over on Friday. Therefore I'm letting you know that on Monday there will be a brief ELA quiz on Unit 5 and a brief Spelling quiz (ten questions each) for each grade. See below for study guide:

FOURTH
ELA-Review function of body systems: respiratory, endocrine, circulatory, muscular, digestive.
         Review use of relative pronouns
         Review feelings conveyed in poems "Dreams" by Langston Hughes and "Humanity" by Elma Stuckey
Spelling- too, two, you're, your, there, they're, their, hear, here, whether, weather
***It is also very important that fourth grade students become familiar with significant mythological characters listed on pp. 1 to 7 on http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/mythology/characters.html for an upcoming lesson next week. Students will be assigned a certain character to research but will be expected to have some knowledge of all.
*** On Thursday, each student will be assigned ONE particular mythological figure to research for an upcoming assignment.  Students are required to write on looseleaf  a brief summary identifying their character (6 to 8 sentences) and definition of their word. Students should also bring in their print out and one picture as a visual aid.

THIRD
ELA - Review meaning of all key words of the Preamble: union, justice, tranquility, defense, welfare, liberty, posterity, constitution, preamble   and notes on the presidential terms.
           Review the bio poems on George Washington and on Abraham Lincoln in the notebook.

Continued Religion notes for Third and Second Grade

Third Grade:
Penitential Rite- We say that we are sorry for our sins at the beginning of the Mass 
Offertory- We bring the gifts of bread and wine up to the altar.   
Consecration- The bread and wine is changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus. 
 Communion Rite-We receive the Body of Christ in the form of a host.   
Dismissal Rite- We are given a blessing and are sent out to serve others

Deacon – ordained minister – one who serves .
 Pastor- priest who is the leader of the parish. 
Bishop- leader of the diocese – successor of the apostles 
Cardinal- Present Cardinal : Timothy Cardinal Dolan .
Pope- leader of all Roman Catholics- Bishop of Rome – Present Pope: Pope Francis I                       Peter was the first Pope named by Jesus.
Religious brothers and sisters – Not ordained but have taken vows to dedicate their lives to God
Lay ministers or persons  –baptized people who are NOT ordained

Presider's Chair - shows the priest's authority to teach the faith

Welcome back! Below is a preview of after Easter Vacation assignments for 2nd, 3rd, 4th

Dear Parents,
         Third and fourth graders (as you know) will be taking their Math State Tests on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. (April 29 to May 2) so main focus should be on that.  ELA , Spelling, and Religion assessments will be given the following week.  Below is a list of spelling words for each grade to be reviewed:

Fourth: too, two, you're, your, there, they're, their, hear, here, whether, weather
Third: believe, caught, does, knew, question, ready, thought, usually, another, important, friendly
Second: our, hour, no, know, blue, blew, two, too, flour, flower, red, read

    All grades must have their Religion Unit 1, 2, 3, and 4 flash cards from www.sadlierreligion.com printed out, glued on 3x5 index cards and stored in four different sandwich bags clearly labeled.
Below is a list of additional words that each grade is responsible to know and will be given in assessments.

Fourth:
Created in God’s image – We are able to think, love, and make choices. 
 Creation- reflects the beauty, wisdom, and goodness of God .
Temptation - NOT sinful but can cause us to make selfish choices .   
 Sacred images – statues or pictures that reminds us of God, Mary, and the saints.
All Saint’s Day – Nov.1          All Soul’s Day – Nov. 2 (we pray for those who have died)
Moral choice- choosing to do what is right according to God’s law.  Feelings are NOT an accurate sign of whether our choice is right or wrong.  One can be glad for making a wrong moral choice or be sad for making a right moral choice. Be able to give example of each.

Steps for making a good moral choice: pray for the help of the Holy Spirit, recall God’s law and Church teachings, consider the consequences of the choice, seek advice when necessary, remember Jesus is with us and speak with him about the choice, recall that our decision affects our relationship with God and others. Memorize.
Conscience formation is a lifelong process. It means learning to know and to choose the good that God wants for us. It is through conscience that we judge whether an act is right or wrong.  Free will – the ability to make choices.
Idolatry – worship of false gods
Adultery- being unfaithful to one’s husband or wife
Bear false witness – lie or spread rumors or gossip
Covet – desiring what is not ours

Advent – beginning of the church season- preparation for Christmas (birth of Jesus)- lasts four weeks.    We use Advent wreath with four candles- We decorate a Jesse Tree with Bible symbols- We set up a Nativity scene of Jesus’ birth. Advent is a season of expectancy.
Lent – lasts forty days in preparation for Easter (resurrection of Jesus) . Begins Ash Wednesday and ends Easter Sunday. Liturgical color is purple. We fast (give up foods we like) and do almsgiving (donate money, food, clothes to the poor). We pray the Stations of the Cross. 

Sin- choice to disobey God’s law  by thought, word, action, or omission (failure to do what is right)
Covenant – agreement God made with the Israelites ((Chosen People) to teach them to love.

True Freedom comes from following Jesus’ Law of Love. The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes.  There is no true freedom except of what is good and just. 

 Ten Commandments –law of God to do good and avoid evil given to Moses on Mount Sinai.  First three deal with love of God and the last seven deal with love of neighbor.  Memorize each of the Ten Commandments.
Jesus’ Two Great Commandments- “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Memorize.
Jesus’ New Commandment- “Love one another.  Such as my love has been for you, so must your love be for one another.”  Memorize.

Beatitudes – ideals of Christian behavior. These are Jesus’ teachings  to reveal God’s plan for our true happiness.  It is also called Sermon on the Mount.   Memorize each of the Beatitudes.

Holiness –sharing in God’s goodness and responding to God’s love by the way we live                
 Saint- person of holiness recognized by the Church                                                                                  
Communion of Saints- binds together those on earth with those in heaven                                      
 Presider’s Chair- shows the priest’s authority to teach the faith                                                      
Sacred vessels- objects used during the Mass such as chalice, paten, cruets                           
Stewardship – share and care for God’s creation
Joyful Mysteries:         Memorize.                                                                                                       
 Annunciation- Visitation- Nativity- The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple - The Finding of Jesus

           Be aware that dismissal this Thursday is at 12:00 and Friday's dismissal is at 11:00.  Report cards will be distributed on Thursday and Parent-Teacher conferences will be from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Honors will be distributed after Stations of the Cross on Friday after Stations of the Cross which is scheduled for 8:30.  Classroom Easter parties will be held from 9:00 to 11:00. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ORDER PIZZA SINCE IT IS TOO EARLY FOR MOST DELEVERIES. INSTEAD  PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILDREN BRING EITHER ONE BOX OF COOKIES, ONE BAG OF  DIFFERENT CHOCOLATE CANDY, OR ONE LARGE BAG OF SNACK (DORITOS, ETC.) EACH STUDENT SHOULD BRING THEIR OWN JUICE (S).   Students also need to bring in two strong plastic or fabric bags to pack up their books for the vacation.  But students should take home Religion books and notebooks in order to review well for Archdiocesan Exam as well as for Math  State Exam. HOMEWORK FOR EASTER VACATION FOR EACH GRADE IS LISTED BELOW.          
  I SENT HOME TWO UNIT 4 TESTS THIS WEEK-ELA AND RELIGION -THIS WEEK. PLEASE HAVE STUDENTS BRING THEM BACK SIGNED AFTER VACATION.   Thank you.

“Dreams” by Langston Hughes, “Humanity” by Elma Stuckey, and “They Were My People” by Grace Nichols.   In two paragraphs explain how these poems express emotions we all have in common citing evidence from the poems. Write an introduction and conclusion.

4/9 REL Be sure to work on all the following:
*Study the definitions of all vocabulary words listed in notebook under aim: To review for Archdiocesan exam as well as ALL notes that follow these words.
*Look up and practice answering all essay questions listed in notebook.

4/9 ELA Study the meaning of the key words (IN CAPITALS) in the Preamble written in the notebook.  Write a sentence for each word that shows that you understand the meaning of each.
 
4/9 REL Be sure to work on all the following:
*Study the definitions of all vocabulary words listed in notebook under aim: To review for Archdiocesan exam as well as ALL notes that follow these words.
*Look up and practice answering all essay questions listed in notebook.
*Review all definitions of words on  flashcards for Units 1,2,3 and 4 on www.sadlierreligion.com.

*each of the Ten Commandments  (and specific ways in which YOU practice each of these)

SECOND GRADE
4/9 ELA Students watch video of folktale "How the Camel Got its Hump"   on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4afoxwg-BH0. On looseleaf write a paragraph write a title and a paragraph of 6 to 8 sentences describing the setting, characters, and moral (lesson) of the story.

4/9 REL: Be sure to work on all of the following:
 *Review  definitions of all words on flashcards for Units 1, 2, 3, and 4 on www.sadlierreligion.com
*Study the definitions of all the words in the glossary in the back of the Religion book.
*Look up and study the definition of the vocabulary words in the Religion notebook.
Be sure to memorize:
*THE ACT OF CONTRITION
*each of the Ten Commandments (and specific ways in which YOU practice each of these)
*each of the steps of Reconciliation and how we prepare for it:
EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE - thinking about our sins and knowing which commandemnts we've broken
 The four steps are:  CONFESSION - telling your sins;  CONTRITION - being sorry for your sins; 
PENANCE - making up for the sins by prayers or good deeds;  ABSOLUTION- forgiveness of sins
*Be able to describe each story and explain what it teaches us:" The  Lost Sheep" and " The Forgiving Father."
