Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for April 27 to May 1

Dear Parents,
         Please be sure that all students bring in the homework assigned last Thursday no later than this Tuesday. All students will need to bring in rosary beads by Wednesday. All students should also be in school uniform for Mass that day as well as on Thursday. There will be no quiz this Monday but there will be an ELA quiz this Friday and a Religion quiz next Monday. Please see below for this week's homework and the week's vocabulary words that should be copied their ELA notebooks.

FOURTH GRADE
ELA 4/28 Practice at least 30 questions on each of the following: TT3  and TT4 on Greek and Latin roots.  Study the figures of speech definitions and examples  on http://mrswarnerarlington.weebly.com/figurative-language.html

 Copy the following vocabulary definitions in ELA notebook and STUDY:
stanza- a set of lines or verses in poetry
simile- comparison using like or as
metaphor- direct comparison  not using like or as
personification - human characteristics are given to an animal or object
alliteration - repetition of same initial letter or sound
onomatopoeia - use of a word to imitate a natural sound
hyperbole - a dramatic exaggeration

THIRD GRADE

Copy the following vocabulary definitions in ELA notebook and STUDY:
root word - main part of a word
suffix - a word part added to the end of a word (eg -ly, -ment)
government-people in charge of controlling, directing, and managing the Constitution
Congress-a formal meeting in which representatives of a nation discuss important matters
Bill of Rights- collective name for the first ten amendments to the US Constitution
Supreme Court-highest court of the judicial branch of the government

fable - a fictional story usually with animal characters that has a moral (lesson)
temporal words- words used to show sequence: first, next, then. last
narrative-writing that tells a story
event- an action happening  in a story
summarize- to write a short version of a story by stating only the main points

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for April 20 to 24

Dear Parents,
          Third and fourth graders will not be given any homework until this Thursday due to the Math State Test.  See below for second grade homework.  Please remember that this Friday we have 12:00 dismissal. Some report cards will be distributed. The rest must be picked up between 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. at the Parent-Teacher's Meeting.

SECOND GRADE
4/21 Rel - Answer pp. 216 and 218 after reading the chapter AGAIN!
Handwriting - Do pp. 75 and 76. Skip p. 74 (We'll do it later!)

Below is the homework that I am assigning for Thursday which is due by Monday, April 27th. Each class will be preparing for next week's lesson by doing research on the topics assigned below now that state tests are over.

FOURTH GRADE
Each of you will be assigned a physician from  http://www.thefamouspeople.com/physicians.php.
Click on the name. Read the entire selection. Underline most important details about the man's work, his discoveries, and his contribution in helping others. Rewrite  the information in your own words on loose leaf as a planning page with enough information to write three paragraphs. You must include two large pictures of the person and of his work.

THIRD GRADE
Each of you will take an interactive tour of Ellis Island on http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/tour/stop1.htm. Keep clicking on next till you make ALL TEN STOPS.  Click on both the story and EACH of the photos at e!ach stop and read carefully.Take notes on looseleaf of interesting things you learned and be ready to answer discussion questions next week in daily assessments.

SECOND GRADE
Each of you will be assigned a folktale on http://www.aaronshep.com/stories/folk.html
You must click on your assigned tale and read it carefully. (Make a print out if possible.) Then on loose leaf write a full heading.  In two paragraphs of five sentences each retell what happens in the story in your own words.  In your conclusion, explain what you think the moral (or lesson) is.
Be sure to begin with the title of the story capitalized correctly. Check for correct use of sentences, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

Dear Parents,
         Welcome back!  I hope you all had a nice Easter vacation!  I need ALL students to bring their completed homework assignments in this Monday so we can review them before the ELA State Test which students in 3rd and 4th will be taking on 5/14 through 5/16. Students should also bring in any notebooks taken home for study.  Third grade will also be preparing and practicing this week  for First Holy Communion which will be celebrated on Sunday, April 19th at 1:00.  This Friday dismissal will be at 12:00 and next Friday as well. Report cards will be distributed on April 24th and parent-teacher conferences will be held from 2:00 to 7:00 that day.
          I am not assigning any homework for Tuesday so students can cannot to review for the test but there will be a Religion assignment due on Friday.

FOURTH
Rel - Use blank sheets  NOT POSTER BOARD (one for each commandment)  to create posters for each of the Ten Commandments you were assigned (see below).  On each sheet you must make up a catchy slogan to get people to obey that commandment. Then write the actual commandment under that. Then write  THREE questions that help you focus on obeying that commandment and include one picture related to each commandment (either self-made or printed).
If your initials are JA, SB, IC, VC, CG, EV  work on commandments 1, 2, 3, 4.
If your initials are AG, AJ, CK, EM work on commandment  5. 6. 7.
If your initials are VM, JR, BR, KU work on commandments  8, 9, 10
***Research each commandment in the textbook for information.  Use markers or colored pencils and make your sheets attractive and interesting.  This will count as a project!  IT IS DUE THIS WEDNESDAY!
ELA 4/14 - AS AN EXTRA REVIEW FOR THE WRITTEN PART OF THE ELA STATE TEST TOMORROW, STUDENTS SHOULD REVIEW THE STUDENT SAMPLES THAT SCORED 4 ON THE 2013 TEST WHICH WE REVIEWED IN CLASS FOR BOTH THE 3RD AND 4TH GRADE. ELA 4/14- AS AN EXTRA REVIEW FOR THE WRITTEN PART OF THE ELA STATE TEST TOMORROW, STUDENTS SHOULD REVIEW THE STUDENT SAMPLES THAT SCORED 4 ON THE 2013 TEST WHICH WE REVIEWED IN CLASS FOR BOTH THE 3RD AND 4TH GRADE.
