Dear Parents,
The assigned summer reading book for July for  students entering third grade in September 2016 is Loyola Kids Book of  Saints  by Amy Welborn.  The questions are divided per chapter as directed by Mr. Woods. The questions should be answered on looseleaf beginning with a full heading  and neatly written.  Each answer should be numbered correctly, written in complete sentences, and based on TEXT EVIDENCE. I suggest that students pace themselves reading ONE chapter and responding to each set of questions PER DAY or every other day so reading is consistent and enjoyable, not overwhelming. One or two sentence responses are fine.

Chapter 1 is based on saints who love children.
  1. Explain something mentioned  about the life of  St. Nicholas that reminds you of Santa Claus.

    11. What helped St. John of the Cross deal with his suffering?

Chapter 5 is based on saints who teach us how to pray.
     12. What was life like as a monk in St. Benedict's monasteries?  What did they do?
     13. Why did St. Dominic think the rosary helps us when we pray?
     14. What difficulties did St. Louis de Monfort face in teaching the poor in France?

Chapter 6 is based on saints who see beyond the everyday.
     15. What did the Virgin Mary ask Juan Diego to do?  Why?
     16. What convinced most people that St. Bernadette did not make up the story of seeing Mary?
