Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for Feb. 29th to March 4

Dear Parents,
        This week Progress Reports will be distributed on Friday so that you can check on your child's progress. These should be signed and returned on Monday.  There will be an ELA Weekly Quiz on Friday for all grades. For fourth grade it will be based on the historical fiction drama  Divided Loyalties by Gare Thompson we are presently studying in class.For third grade it will be based on the noin fiction book Face to Face with Wolves by Judy Brandenburg. For second grade it will be based on assorted Greek myths. Below I have listed web sites for students that  should be very useful in helping students get a good background and provide suitable research so they have a better understanding of the material. I will be questioning students on what is presented on these web sites.
Please check back on Thursday for the next homework assignment for all classes!

FOURTH

On looseleaf take notes of eight important points you'd like to use for a class discussion. Write them neatly in a bulleted list.

3/3 REL Print out all flash cards words for Unit 3 from www.sadliereligion.com and STUDY the definitions of all the words. Be ready to be assessed on them!
For ELA quiz study the defintions of script, act, scene, dialogue,setting, stage directions, abolish, alter, destructive, government, institute, right (in notebook). Writing assignment will be based on characters' perspectives on excerpts of Declaration of Independence we studied.

THIRD

Writing will be based on facts about wolves on the website cited above and from work done in class.



SECOND
3/1 ELA-In order to get a better background on Greek myths we have been studying click on http://greece.mrdonn.org/myths.html and scroll down to click on any of the stories we studied in class. 
On looseleaf choose any one of the stories with characters we have studied in class 
and make a bulleted list of six events of the story in correct sequence. Each bullet should have only one sentence.

 3/3 REL Print out all flash cards words for Unit 3 from www.sadliereligion.com and STUDY the definitions of all the words. Be ready to be assessed on them!
For ELA quiz study the defintions of  current, desperately, plummet, proof, aimlessly, commotion, dreadful, accurate, guidance, reputation, trample, sill, resist, skilled, terms, tremendously.     Writing will be based on describing any of the monster figures of mythology that we studied or explaining how any of the characters used their supernatural powers. Review on website above.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for Feb. 22 to 26

Dear Parents,
        We are celebrating Hippie Day this Tuesday.  One student from each class will be chosen to enter the school contest at 2:00. There will be 12:00 dismissal on Friday. The weekly Religion Quiz will be given on Wednesday  to all classes.  Please see below for the study guiide.  Thursday's homework will be posted here on Wed. Please check back. I need to attend a meeting on Thursday afternoon.  Work will be left for second grades and third graders to do independently.

FOURTH
2/23 Religion quiz Wed.  Study Chapter 20 pp. 232 -234 on Lent and Chapter 11  on Third Commandment.   Also memorize the Corporal Works and the Spiritual Works of  Mercy (p. 138) and ways to practice them as fourth graders and review  the holy days of obligation (p. 135).

2/25 Study notes in ELA notebook on Parts of a Drama (on sheet), notes on book Divided Loyalties,
and the summarizing strategy.  On looseleaf write a summary of six to eight sentences on what happened in  Scene 1 and 2 of Act 1  covered in class. If you paid attention in class, you should be able to do this! Remember to write a heading.
Finish Monday's classwork: from Voyages:  pp. 106, 115 (capitals), 94 (homophones), and 113 (apostrophes) if you have not  yet handed it in.

THIRD
2/23 Religion quiz Wed.  Study Chapter 20 pp. 232 -234 on Lent and Chapter 17.  Also memorize the Mass responses on p. 205 and the parts of the Mass in sequence (in the notebook).

2/25 Read the story "Is My Dog a Wolf?" on http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/2014/release/Gr3-ELA.pdf pp. 7 to 10.  Then print out p. 14 (or do on looseleaf) a paragraph of six to eight sentences explaining how dogs and wolves are similar using text evidence.  Write a title  and include an introduction and a conclusion. Skip the multiple choice.

SECOND
2/23  Religion quiz Wed.  Study Chapter 20 pp. 232 -234 on Lent and Chapter 16 on the Mass. Know the menaing of  the Lenten practices of fasting and almsgiving.  Study the Stations of the Cross on http://www.loyolapress.com/assets/lent/stations-of-the-cross-for-children.pdf.

2/25 On looseleaf rewrite the myth you did in class or write a new one if you wish.  It should not be longer than six sentences. Remember the rules: Use two characters, one setting, and one plot theme listed in your notebook. Use your imagination to explain something in nature if you can. Begin with a title and include an introduction and a conclusion.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for Feb. 15 to 19

Dear Parents,
        The previous ELA quiz focused mostly on vocabulary and applying writing skills, so this Friday there will be a quiz for each grade focusing on reviewing phonics and grammar skills.  I am providing a study guide below early enough to allow each student time to come prepared to do their best.  I strongly suggest that the fourth grade in particular REVIEW better!

FOURTH
2/16 REstudy Phonics pp. 37 to 47 (prefixes and suffixes) and Progress Book pp. 134 to 137 (punctuation skills and relative adverbs and pronouns). ELA Quiz this Friday!
ANY CLASSWORK NOT COMPLETED SHOULD BE TURNED IN THIS WEEK.

2/18 MEMORIZE the Corporal Works and the Spiritual Works of Mercy. On looseleaf write a practical way for a fourth grader to follow EACH one of the Corporal and Spiritual Works. Number each one so that they are in  correct order.

THIRD
2/16 Review  Phonics  pp. 51 to 57 (syllables and beginning & final blends)
Grammar Workbook - Review pp. 28 to 35 and Progress Book pp. 223-224 (compound/complex sentences)

2/18 MEMORIZE the parts of the Mass in correct sequence (See Religion notebook). Study Chapter 17.  On looseleaf answer p. 205. Write out each "We hear..." part and "Our response.." part next to it.
MEMORIZE the response to each.

SECOND
2/16 On looseleaf answer the Guided Practice and Independent Practice sections on pp. 48, 49, and 50 (irregular plural nouns and collective nouns) in Progress Book. THEN REVIEW this for ELA Quiz this Friday!

2/18  On looseleaf answer the Guided Practice and Independent Practice sections on p. 130 (prefixes) and p.38 (suffixes) and p.51 (capitalization of holidays and places) in Progress Book. THEN REVIEW this for ELA Quiz this Friday!

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, 4th for Feb. 8 to 12

Dear Parents,
        This Ash Wednesday our third grade clas will be leading the Mass.  All students should be in uniform. This Friday there is no school due to a Religion Conference Day for teachers and on the following Monday for President's Day. Last Friday students in all grades took their Religion quiz.  This week I will be giving only an ELA quiz on Wed.  Please see below for a study guide for each grade.

FOURTH GRADE
2/9 ELA Quiz is tomorrow.*Study vocabulary definitions and notes in ELA notebook on distinguishing the elements of  prose, poetry, and drama. Be sure to srefer to the web site: http://mhschool.com/lead_21/grade4/ccslh_g4_rl_1_2c.html.
*Study Phonics pp. 37 to 47 (prefixes and suffixes)
*Study Progress Book pp. 118 to  122.

2/11 Religion- Study Chapter 11. MEMORIZE the Corporal Works and Spiitual Works of Mercy.  Think of ways to practice each as discussed in class.  Study also pp.232 to 234.
ELA - Review Progress Book pp. 134 to 138 for quiz next week.  Answer p. 139 on looseleaf. Directions say to write entire paragraph over correctly.

THIRD GRADE
2/9 ELA Quz is tomorrow.*Study vocabulary definitions in ELA notebook..
*Study Grammar Workshop pp. 28 to 35 (simple, compund, complex sentences)
*Study Phonics pp, 51 to 57 (syllables and beginning & final blends)
*Study the ELA  notes on the fable "The Wolf and the Lean Dog" including the moral.

2/11 Religion - Study  pp. 232 -234 in text book and notes on the parts of the Mass in Rel. notebook.
Know the correct order of the parts of the Mass, the responses,and what happens in each.
ELA - Review simple, compund, complex sentences in Grammar Workshop. On looseleaf write a heading.  Answer the Guided Practice and Independent Practice on pp. 223 and 224 in Progress Book.

SECOND GRADE
2/9 ELA Quiz is tomorrow.*Study only the following definitions in the  ELA notebook : glimpse, sanctuary, securely, spectators, tending, amusing, foresight, hindsight, ridiculous, terrifying.
*Study multiple meaning word:  pine  and study synonyms for retrieve
*Study the characteristics of a Greek myth and copy in ELA notebook:
   Aim: To learn the characteristics of  a Greek myth
    * to try to explain stories about nature in an unrealistic way (myth of Demeter  on the seasons)
    *to include supernatural beings (gods and goddesses) and supernaturnal events (transformation)
     * to help us learn about the ancient Greek culture 
*Study how to use the Somebody-Wanted- But-So-Then strategy in the ELA notebook.

2/11
Religion - Study  pp 232-234 in textbook about Lent.
 ELA- On loosleaf write a full heading. Choose ONE of the characters and complete a Somebody-Wanted- But-So-Then chart. Follow the sample in your ELA notebook.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for Feb. 1 to 5

Dear Parents,
         Please remember that there is 12:00 dismissal this Friday, and parent- teacher conferences will be held from 1;00 to 7:00 p.m. for report cards.  There will be a Religion Quiz for all grades this Thursday due to early dismissal on Friday.    FATHER WILL BE GIVING OUT REPORT CARDS AT 8;00  AM SO STUDENTS SHOULD ARRIVE EARLY.

      ELA - Practice the TWO sections on using coordinatng conjunctions for compound sentences and subordinating conjunctions for complex sentences on ixl.com.  I will be checking your work on line so use your correct password. In Phonics study counting syllables pp.51-52 and 53-56 beginning and ending blends.  Quiz next week.


SECOND
2/2 - REL - Study Chapters 11 and 12 for quiz on Thursday.  Memorize the entire Act of Contrition on p. 139.
