ELA notes for fourth grade only

Dear Fourth Graders,
        Due to the new schedule, we have less time in class than before. I am therefore posting the vocabulary and notes for the first few lessons below.  These must be copied neatly in your ELA notebook so you can study for the next  quiz. The pages refer to where these words and idioms are located in The Hope Chest.

1. alleged- claimed to be true without having proof'
2. deny- to refused to give or allow something; to decline
3. committed- did or performed
4. banks (p.4) - sides of a river or stream
5. defeated (p.14) - caused something to fail
6. disloyal (p.16) - unfaithful
7. imposing (p.2)- overwhelming; impressive
8. opposition party- (p.4) - a group of people against another
9. ratification- (p.14)- approved in a formal way
10. reconvenes- (p.13) - comes together again
11. seldom- (p.3) - not often, rarely

Examples of idioms (figurative language) and their meanings used in The Hope Chest
12. It will make your head spin (p.3) - It makes you dazed and confused
13. gave her a jolt (p. 6) - surprised her
14. made Violet snap (p.17) - made her lose her temper
15.  neither here nor there (p.15) - not important
16. baptism by fire (p, 13)-  any experience that tests one's courage for first time
17. threatening tower of authority (pp.3-4)- tall and scary


Aim:  To describe book The Hope Chest by Karen Schwabach

The Hope Chest  is a novel.  It is historical fiction set in the 1920's during the passage of the nineteenth amendment which gave women the right to vote. The book deals with womens' suffrage.  Suffrage means the right to vote in political elections.

Homework for April 24 to 28 for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th grades

Dear Parents,
     Please make sure that students assigned the action plan for ELA have completed their eight i Ready tasks including the FOUR Read to Write portions.  Please make sure all other students have completed their two i Ready tasks  including their TWO Read to Write portions.
    This week third and fourth graders will begin Module 4 and second graders will begin Domain 10. Please be aware also there has been a change in the schedule for all classes.  There will be a Religion Quiz this Friday and an ELA quiz next Monday for all classes.  Please see below for a study guide and this week's assignments.
       FOURTH GRADERS, please remember to bring in $6.50 so Mr. Woods can order the book you'll need for Module 4: The Hope Chest   by Karen Schwabach.


FOURTH GRADE
4/25 Religion quiz this Friday. Be sure to memorize  the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary and watch both  luminous mysteries link      and  http://www.rosarycenter.org/luminous.htm .  Also memorize the Joyful Mysteries and watch  joyful mysteries link
Study Chapter 26 . Answer p. 306 on loose leaf.

THIRD GRADE
4/25 Religion quiz this Friday. Be sure to study the definitions of following: deacon, pastor, bishop, pope, layperson, religious brother/sister,  Annunciation, Assumption, Immaculate Conception.
Review the Sacraments of Initiation, Healing, Service.
Study Chapter 25.  Answer p. 294 on loose leaf.

Homework for April 17 to 21 for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th grades

Dear Parents,
         This Monday I will begin checking the Read to Write section on iReady  for the work assigned before the Easter break. All students doing the Action Plan assigned by Mrs. Bagley should have completed the Read to Write sections on the TWO Close Reading assignments. This week all students doing the Action Plan should complete the Read to Write sections on the next TWO Close Reading assignments. Grades will be recorded on a scale from 0 to 4.

UPDATE: On Mon., April 17, I checked the first two Read to Write sections of those doing the Action Plan.  Some were not done at all!  Some were in progress. Some others even decided to enter a set of random letters.making no sense!  By the end of next week FOUR writing grades will be recorded.  I strongly suggest you take this work seriously!

       Students not assigned the Action Plan should have completed only ONE Read to Write section for the Close Reading on iReady assigned before the Easter break (see below).  The assignment for this week which should be completed by next Sunday, April 23.
There will also be a Religion Quiz for all classes on April, 28th to prepare for the Archdiocesan Exam. Be sure to review vocabulary on the links I provided (see below)

Homework for April 3 to 7 for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades

Dear Parents,
         This our last week before the Easter break.  This Wed., at 9:45 third and fourth graders will be go going to Lenten confessions.  Students should review what they should say which is written in their Religion notebooks as well as review the Act of Contrition in their Religion books.

BE SURE TO BRING IN AT LEAST EITHER YOUR LENTEN BOX OR YOUR PENNIES FOR PATIENTS BOX BY TOMORROW.  IT IS DUE BY TOMORROW!!!!!  IF SECOND GRADERS WANT TO BRING IN SOME EASTER CANDY TO SHARE, THAT WILL BE FINE, BUT NO PARTY.


        On Thursday report cards will be distributed.  On Friday dismissal will be at 12:00 and Parent -Teacher conferences will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 pm.   Those that are failing in Math or ELA will be receiving a notice on the report cards of assignments in the i Ready programs in Math and ELA that must be started over the Easter break and completed by mid-June.  Those that are passing will be also be assigned some work on these programs but not as intensive.

    All students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th should have taken home their ELA and Religion notebooks, their Religion Workbook, and their Grammar Workshop (3rd &4th) as instructed.
 

FOURTH GRADE
Religion -   Practice all definitions on Fourth grade vocabulary flashcards   I will be  quizzing students after vacation.
ELA- For this week do Close Reading Lesson: Comparing Topics and Themes in Stories (only for students not doing the action plan)


THIRD GRADE 
 Religion -   Practice all definitions on  Third grade vocabulary flashcards  I will be  quizzing students after vacation.
ELA- For this week do Close Reading lesson on Recounting Key Details (only for students not doing the action plan)

SECOND GRADE 
 Religion -   Practice all definitions on  Third grade vocabulary flashcards  I will be  quizzing students after vacation. For second graders I recommend  doing the games. This is good practice for next year!
