Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for 10/19 to 10/23

Dear Parents,
          Interim tests for ELA will be given this Wednesday as well as weekly quizzes.  See below for study guide for each grade.  This week class each received  FOUR  corrected weekly quizzes (two in Religion and two in ELA).  These need to be signed by a parent and returned by this Friday.  IF A STUDENT DOES NOT RETURN ALL FOUR QUIZZES, NO MORE QUIZZES WILL BE SENT HOME! Students are NOT allowed to make any corrections or changes on the quizzes but they can do corrections on a separate sheet of looseleaf.

FOURTH GRADE
 10/20 Study for the Religion quiz on Wed. all of Chapter 4 including key words and especially the parable of "The Prodigal Son" and its moral (lesson).
 10/20 Study for ELA quiz on Thurs. on www.ixl.com: shades of meaning and multiple meaning words. Also study in Phonics the two vowel sounds for ow as in blow and drown and the two vowel sounds for /u/ as in true and cure.

10/20 Study for  ELA quiz on Thurs. the definitions of folllowing words: admiration, frontier, colossal, inseparable , separable.  Know the difference between a fairy tale (that uses magic) and a tall tale (that uses exaggeration). Be able to give examples of each type of story read aloud in class.
Review in Superkids Workbook p. 33 (-s or -es). Review in Phonics short vowel sounds /a/,/e/, /i/.
Be able to give examples of exaggerations in the stories of "Paul Bunyan" and "Pecos Bill."

FOURTH GRADE
10/13 REL- Study Chapter 4 and notes in the notebook.  Be sure to know definitions of the following:
 sin, temptation, conscience, conscience formation, free will, venial sin, mortal sin, sin of omission,
samaritan.  Study the parable of "The Good Samaritan" on p. 49.  On looseleaf, write heading and answer p. 54 (answers only)

Study in Voyages p. 49 (abbreviations for months, days, name titles)
Study in Superkids p. 57 (use of commas in a series, dates, after greetings and closings, in addresses)
Study in Phonics pp. 22,24, 26, 28 (short vowel sounds)
Review the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes."  Explain what the characters pretended to see and why.  Think about what the lesson of the story is.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th: Oct. 5 to 9 UPDATED WTH THURSDAY'S HOMEWORK

Dear Parents,
          This is a reminder about the weekly quizzes for this Wed. (Religion) and Thurs. (ELA). There will be no written homework on Tuesday this week so students use the time to review well for these quizzes. Please see below for a study guide for each grade.  PLEASE  MAKE SURE STUDENTS ARE LOOKING UNDER THE CORRECT GRADE SINCE I NOTICED SOME ERRORS IN HOMEWORK DUE TO THIS MIX-UP!  Corrected classwork and homework has been and will continue to be returned to the students so please check homework folders for these papers.  All writing samples must kept in class in their portfolios. Homework for 2nd, 3rd, 4th for Week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 UPDATED SEE WHAT IS IN CAPITALS

Dear Parents,
         This Friday we will have our Mass for the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi.  Students are allowed to bring their pet to be blessed by Father during the Mass; however parents MUST take the pet back home right after Mass.  We will also have 12:00 dismissal that day.  I plan to have the first weekly Religion quiz this week but need to work out with  the other teachers which day is possible so students don't have too many quizzes scheduled the same day. Please have students review all Religion notes in the notebook as well as definitions copied in the notebook from the blog.

THIS WEEK ALL THIRD  AND FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS RECEIVED A  NEW GRAMMAR WORKSHOP BOOK.  PLEASE HAVE IT COVERED. NO ONE MAY WRITE IN IT SINCE IT WILL BE COLLECTED AND USED NEXT YEAR!  I WILL BE RETURNING ALL CLASSWORK AND HOMEWORK THIS WEEK.  WRITING SAMLES MUST BE KEPT IN PORTFOILIOS THAT PARENTS MAY SEE WHEN THEY SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE A TEACHER.

FOURTH

Next, ...  Last,... Write a conclusion.  It must be in paragraph form and have at least 5 or 6 sentences. Be sure to check for correct use of capital letters and punctuation.

10/1 On looseleaf write a full heading. In Voyages Workbook p. 28 put the letter and copy each           sentence with the correct punctuation.  On p. 29 answer B,C, D, E only. Do both on same sheet of looseleaf. Next week there will be a Religion Quiz on Wed. and an ELA Quiz on Thurs. For Religion study all notes and definitions in notebook. For ELA study all definitions in ELA notebook and  review homework pages in Voyages.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for Sept. 21 to 25

Dear Parents,
          This is a reminder to some parents who have not yet sent in the TWO reams of blank sheets  (500 sheets each) required by Mr. Woods for printing copies. As stated in my August supply list blog, the packs need to be sent only to the home room teacher so I can send them to the office.
This is a reminder also that the homework I assign for the week should be done  only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Our first weekly quiz in Religion has been rescheduled for  NEXT WEEK ( is  ALL classes should all the Religion definitions which were copied in their notebook (from the blog) as well as the notes given in class.  Starting this week all definitions will be copied in class (2 or 3 per day) and no longer put on the blog.  Please see below for this week's homework:

FOURTH
9/22 Rel - Study all notes and definitions in Religion notebook for quiz NEXT WEEK.  On looseleaf  write a full heading with Religion  as the subject.  Write a paragraph of 8 sentences describing what you learned about St. Franis of Assisi fromthe video we watched and discussed in class.  Be sure to write complete sentences and check for correct use of capitalization and punctuation.

9/24 ELA - On looseleaf write a full heading. Homework for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for Sept. 14 to 18 Please read updated bold print area

Dear Parents,
         Welcome to a new school year!  This is an important reminder that several third grade students did not bring in their TWO reams of blank paper (each set must have 500 sheets) needed for copies this year.  Mr. Woods has requested that two sets from each child be sent to the office otherwise copies cannot be made!  Some students have sent only one set. Please send in the required amount by this Friday if you have not done so.  All parent sign in sheets and two emergency cards are due by this Friday, Sept. 18th as well.  Remember dismissal is at 12:00 this Friday!
         Please make sure that all students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have  three SHARPENED pencils and  several blank looseleaf papers in their homework folder EVERY DAY to be used in class.  All students should have ALL  their books  and two notebooks (one for Religion and the other for ELA) for class every day starting on Monday.
       Please check the blog every week on TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS for weekly vocabulary words and homework assignments. On Monday I will explain how these should be copied into their correct notebook for study. Please WAIT until Tuesday after class to copy the following.
      On Monday, Sept. 28th the second, third, and fourth grades will be have a field day trip to the park near Good Shepherd school.  Mr. Woods has requested that every teacher bring three parents to help watch the children.  Please send me a note if  you are free and would be able to come with us.  You cannot bring any other children with you.  Also any child that wishes to go on the trip MUST bring in the permission slip that was given out at the opening meeting (or sent home with your child when he arrived).  Please sign the slip titled "Field Trip Permission Request" and send it in as possible or your child will NOT be allowed to attend the trip. Please remember also that all signed forms and TWO filled in emergency cards are due by this Friday. As of now, I have received only 17 out of 23 set of signed sheets.  They must all come in stapled or clipped together no later than this Friday!
   
FOURTH GRADE

need to print out the sheets of words with definitions. Unit 1 words must be printed out by next Mon.  For this week, students should copy all words and definitions in their Religion notebook and study them  for their first assessment this Friday.

SECOND GRADE
9/15***Second graders have till Mon. Sept. 21 to have these vocabulary words copied into their ELA and Religion notebooks.   I will not be giving assessments on these till next week.  Starting next week students will be given two or three words and definitions per day in each subject to copy in their notebooks.

 Students must go to the web site: www.sadlierreligion.com/we believe and under games and activities click on Unit 1 for a drop down menu that will reveal flashcards at the bottom. Students
need to print out the sheets of words with definitions. Unit 1 words must be printed out by next Mon.  For this week, students should copy all words and definitions in their Religion notebook and study them  for their first assessment this Friday.

9/17 On looseleaf write a full heading : On first line first and last name and date (Sept. 17, 2015). On second line: O.L.Q.M. and Grade 2.  On third line:  subject  (ELA) in the middle.
 Then follow directions in Voyages Workbook  p. 20  and answer both  A and B sections.  This is due this Friday!    DO NOT WRITE IN THE VOYAGES WORKBOOK.

Supply List for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Graders for Sept. 2015 REVISED: SEE HIGHLIGHTED AREA

                                                              SUPPLY LIST FOR 2015
 Dear Parents,
         Welcome back!  This year I will have THIRD grade as my home room and I will be teaching Religion  and ELA to all three grades.  It is very important that all students get the EXACT supplies listed below to avoid delays and confusion once classes begin!

SUPPLIES NEEDED DAILY:
*THREE sharpened pencils each with eraser ( No sharpeners : pencils should be sharpened at home)
 Extra eraser is fine! No pens!
*THREE PLASTIC folders with pockets on the BOTTOM (not sides) and clear INSERT panels in the front and back  (available in school supply room) The first  will be used as TEST folder. The second as CLASSWORK folder . The third will be used as HOMEWORK folder.
*TWO composition hard cover notebooks (NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS ALLOWED). First should be labeled RELIGION. Second should be labeled ELA
*one loose leaf pad (sheets with holes that can be torn out one at a time -  but NOT with wire spiral)
*TWO reams of copy/xerox paper (500 sheets each)  to be used for printing and illustrations) (3rd grade only)  This was recently requested by our principal.
*one small thesaurus (as vocabulary aid for composition work)
 *a set of about 12  different colored pencils - NOT CRAYONS
*a glue stick (no jar or bottle of glue)
*one YELLOW highlighter (3rd &4th only)
* one twelve inch ruler
 * TWO FLAT PLASTIC or FABRIC pencil cases (NO pencil boxes). One should hold pencils, eraser, highlighter. Other should hold the colored pencils and glue stick.
*a pack of different colored construction paper (to be kept at home till needed)
* a family box of tissues
* a roll of paper towels (only  3rd)
* one container of bleach wipes (only  3rd)
* one bottle of  hand sanitizer (only 3rd)
* one pack of  different colored labels (only 3rd)
  Book covers will also be needed but brown paper will work just as well to cover text  and workbooks.


SOME REMINDERS:
*Our opening meeting with parents will be on Tues. Sept.8th and classes begin on Sept. 9th. Calendars and forms that need to be filled out will be given out at the meeting and all questions about supplies will be answered.
*It is very IMPORTANT that all students arrive at school NO later than 8:00 a.m.each morning!
* It is NECESSARY that parents read the blog each week on Mondays to check for the assigned homework, upcoming tests, and any notices or reminders. Please also recheck during the week for any revisions or updates.
* Any appointments to meet with teachers must be made through the office only.
*Students are not allowed to bring any toys to class. A reading book or test prep activity book is allowed in case students have any free time.
*Students who wish to bring their own lunch must bring it in a lunch box that is NOT attached to their book bag since it must be left in their home room till lunch time. Water bottles are allowed but no soda or juice can be brought to class.
*All students should be in uniform everyday including shoes.  Sweaters must be dark blue with no hoods.
*Finally, please remember to label all supplies  including book bags with your child's name!
