Homework for Dec. 16 to 20

Dear Parents,
Hopefully you read my blog on Friday, so as a reminder there will be a Math and Science Quiz this week and possible a Religion quiz as well.  On Monday, I will be putting a new index card in your child's folder (WHICH MUST STAY THERE) with the website, username, and password for the Success Maker program.  I will have the students practice it in school this week and Mr. Woods wants students to also practice it for homework--both Reading and Math.  This program is intended to help students prepare for MAP testing which will begin soon after students return to school after the break.
Lessons and Carols will be in church on Wed. at 8:30. Students can bring in TWO small Christmas cards to write to someone in the school.  There will be a bake sale on Thurs. in case students wants to buy any treats.  On Thursday also we will be packing and putting away all books so students must bring a strong fabric or plastic bag to pack them up.  On Friday dismissal is at 12:00 and  we will have our pizza party.  Please bring in $4.00 no later than Tuesday.  All students will need to bring in are their own juices.

*Please click here to view this week's lesson plan.

*****Today I went to put the card for Success Maker in each child's folder and lo and behold students told me their folder was at home. I also noticed that the other card from Pearson was missing!!!  I explained that it was VERY  IMPORTANT that these cards remain in their folders at all times!!!
When we start using the computer room this week, these students will not be ready.  If you have the information elsewhere, then you need to make another card for them.  I am holding the Success Maker card for those who did not have their folder.

Homework for CHRISTMAS VACATION (Fri.)

****IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS:  It is necessary that every student do at least one hour in Reading and one hour in Math EACH week in the Success Maker program during the Christmas vacation.  It is best to do each in 20 minute sessions: that is Reading  three times a week and Math three times a week.  I have access to see what students are doing. The program will let me know how long they spend, how many questions they answer correctly. and even if they are rushing through or taking too long.  If students receive too much help, the program will keep offering them more difficult or challenging questions they will not be able to do by themselves, so please monitor them but don't help!
Students are also expected to read the five books on Pearson and respond to the questions on loose leaf from the three I assigned. The FIVE new books to be read on the Pearson website are:   At School,  My School,  Off to School We Go,  Let's Be Fair,  and It's Time to Get in Line.  Students should answer the questions ONLY for the last three books which are Off to School We Go,  Let's Be Fair,  and It's Time to Get in Line. The loose leaf sheets are in their folder.

Please remember that students will be taking the MAP test on the computer soon after their return so this review is NECESSARY!  EACH child has received the card with website, username, and password and all has been checked to make sure it works!
Please check the blog during the Christmas vacation in case I must send you any important notices.

***For those parents who are wondering about homework for the Christmas vacation, I am assigning work since students will be taking their very important on-line MAP test again in January.  I am assigning FIVE new books to be read on the Pearson website:  The titles are:   At School,  My School,  Off to School We Go,  Let's Be Fair,  and It's Time to Get in Line.   They will be given the 3 loose leaf  sheets next week so they can answer the questions in complete sentences ONLY for the last three books mentioned above.  It is important that students do this work themselves (with some help as needed, of course) but it is of no benefit to your children if all their work is done for them.  It is important to keep practicing the reading so they are prepared for the MAP test when they return.
The books will appear on the Pearson website starting Dec. 16 and will there till Jan. 6.

**** I found out TODAY that Mr. Woods wants first graders to start working on the Success Maker program which is now up and running again.  Today I received each student's new password and username and I will be sending these out on Monday along with the website for Success Maker on an index card which must be kept in the front panel of their folder. You may take a picture of it for safe keeping.  It helps students in both Reading and Math. I will be keeping track during the vacation of what students are doing on the program.  I strongly suggest 20 minutes a day in either subject at least every other day! I will start showing the students next week and be assigning some work in class and for homework.

*No Math homework tonight!
Science-  On  loose leaf write a full heading : Name and Oct. 24, 2019 on the top line.  O.L.Q.M and Grade 1 on the second line and Science in the middle of the third line. Answer the two questions at the bottom of p. B19 in complete sentences.
Religion- Study Chapter 3 for test tomorrow.
***Dress down allowed tomorrow!

***Today I assigned on the Pearson website FIVE leveled readers so students can practice reading at home.  You must click on Classes and the list of five books will appear: Animal Adventures Animals Change,  How Animals Move Giraffe Grows Up, and Guide to Growing.   The books will be available  to read on Pearson website till Nov. 4.  Later on students will practice answering the questions on the back cover of three of these books.

Homework  for Oct. 25  (Fri.)
Math- Do workbook pp. 133 and 134.   For example in 9 - 1 you can count ON  by starting at 1 and hopping forward to 9 (eight hops) on a number line--- OR you can count BACK by starting at 9 and  making one hop  back  to get to 8.  So  counting back is better  here because it is a shorter trip. The MIDDLE number in each addition or subtraction sentence shows the number of hops to make: eg. 9-8=1 means start at 9 and make 8 hops back and 8+1=9 means start at 8 and make 1 hop forward.

Reading - Practice reading all five leveled readers on the Pearson website which I mentioned above in yesterday's homework.  You may read also the questions on the back page of each but do not answer them yet.

***The THREE students who took their Science book home today must do their Science homework from p. B 19 tonight.  Remember to restate.  Answer in complete sentences. Parents please look at the corrected Science homework I sent home in their folders and review so work shows improvement.

***Please ask your child which class treat he or she is bringing in for Halloween.  I assigned each child a different treat so we can have variety.  Each child will need to bring two bags of assorted wrapped up candy which will be opened up and dumped into their bag or  pumpkin to give out during the Pre K and Kindergarten parade.  Each child will also need to bring another treat to share with our class.  No big bottles of juice or glass containers are allowed-- only small containers. Students must come in dressed up in their costume and go home the same way.  Make up and masks  are allowed but please NO violence-related props such as knives or guns. I will be ordering pizza for the class-at least two slices each and some extra candy treats. Please have your child bring in $4.00 on Monday to cover the cost.  Please make sure your child brings in a plastic pumpkin or Trick or Treat bag to carry extra treats home.  There will be no homework on Halloween!

****I was very upset to see that a few students did not bother to do ANY of the homework I assigned on Friday even when they had from Friday to Wednesday to complete it.  I have had to enter ZERO for all of these assignments and that grade will remain if work is not completed by tomorrow.  Some students simply said "I forgot" and that is not acceptable!  Completing homework ON TIME is important and WILL affect their over all grade.  It is also VERY IMPORTANT that all parents read the blog daily.  Some students also need in to bring in their test folder!

Homework for Oct. 18 (Fri.)
Math - Do pp. 116 and 117 in workbook.  Part of p. 116 was explained and done in class.

***Today I placed in the front panel of your child's folder an index card with the website, username, and password for our Ready Gen Reading program.  Make sure you enter each one with no spaces in between.  The password begins with a capital F and ends with the number 1.   There are two tasks assigned: a book Stellaluna and Phonics games in Pack Up Skills.  Children can hear the book read to them as the words are highlighted  and in the Phonics games children can practice their consonant and vowel sounds. ***Students may dress down tomorrow if they wish.

***As of now students are having gym twice a week:  on Tuesday first period and on Wednesday last period.  Please make sure they wear gym cloths on those days.  Also, I would appreciate that your children do not come in with toys, gadgets, extra jewelry, or things that distract them or expensive things that can be lost or damaged.  I have enough LEARNING activities and manipulatives to keep them busy and as you know, getting children  to focus is very difficult and important at this age.

Homework for Sept. 13 Fri.
***Next week there will be MAP testing so just continue working on the Success Maker program and you can also work on the Phonics games on the pearson website I assigned.
*** There will be a  Religion quiz on Chapter 1 on Thurs. next week.
*** Next week I will send home all corrected homework sheets.  I grade 4 and 3 as passing and 2 and 1 as failing. Any student who does turn homework in on time has zero.  I noticed that several students are not following all directions. For example many did not CIRCLE in Math as the directions stated.  In Religion many did not answer the last question which on the blog it says to do!!!!  One of the most important test  skills  is the ability to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.  They need to develop this skill now.

Notices and Reminders for Week of Sept. 5 and 6

Dear Parents,
I would appreciate that you read the following carefully.   Today we collected all paper and cleaning goods, as well as loose-leaf and construction paper and stored them in the classroom.  These will be distributed to the children throughout the year as needed.  I collected TWO folders per child and left your child with ONE which will be labeled their HOMEWORK FOLDER. This folder must travel to school and back home every day and must be kept neat to hold only important paper and cards. If you have not done so, please send in the three folders NO LATER THAN MONDAY.  I  sent home all packages  of unsharpened pencils, markers, colored pencils.  Please open the boxes and place three sharpened pencils with erasers and three different colored dry erase markers in a pencil case and the set of colored pencils in another pencil case and leave the rest AT HOME.  A glue stick should be placed with the colored pencils so children are prepared for class daily!
The two reams of blank paper you sent in were collected and taken to the office so the principal can make copies for us during the year.  As I mentioned at the meeting I will need you to send in one more ream of this blank paper for classroom use. I have enough personal white boards for each child so there is no need to purchase these.  However, I do need every parent to send in five  dollars for the privacy shields to be used during testing. I will have someone order them by next Wed. so please send in the money before then.
Please make sure you do NOT send in pencil sharpeners or loose-leaf binder or pencil boxes.  Children sit as tables and have only a seat sack to store their books and supplies so there not much room. The one notebook should have should be composition type, have a hard cover, and consist of enough pages. Please make sure you send in the correct folders shown at the meeting.
We have received a schedule yet but I was informed gym starting next week will be on Tuesday at 8:15.  On Fridays we can have dress down as long as class behavior is ok.
