 Dear Parents,

This Friday will be at 12:00 and our gym period will be in the morning. Students will be receiving a new sight word list today that will be placed in their folder. A few words will be assigned each day for review and then there will be a Spelling Quiz every week on ten of the assigned words.

Students may start to bring in their "created instrument"  project starting Monday if they wish; however they have until Wed. to bring it in. There will be two Science quizzes this week.  The first quiz on Wed. covers what the students learned about sound.  The second quiz on Thurs. covers what the students learned in class from creating instruments. Study guides for both will be posted on google classroom for review.  Please refer to the summary below:

What we learned from our classroom activities:
*We filled six glasses with increasing amounts of water (from least to most) and then tapped on each glass with a wooden spoon.  The glasses with less amount of water made a higher sound and the the glasses with most amount of water made a lower sound.
*We observed our teacher blow into a set of straws taped together but cut in different lengths from shortest to the longest.  Blowing into the shorter straws made a higher sound and blowing into the longer straws made a lower sound.
*We made a rubber band guitar by putting different rubber bands around a box. Thicker rubber bands made a lower sound (vibrates slowly) and thinner ones made a higher sound (vibrates quickly).
*We made maracas by filling an Easter egg with pennies and taping plastic spoons on either side to serve as a handle for shaking.

***Instruments are played by using different motions: hitting (drum), blowing (horn), shaking (maracas), pulling (guitar)

A Spelling quiz based on the first ten sight words on the list is scheduled for this Friday.

This week school will be closed Thursday and Friday.  I will be giving a Writing Test on Monday, Reading Test on Tuesday, and Math test on Wednesday.

I was informed that it is now possible to access it on an iPad as well.

Besides working on Phonics skills daily, I have started students practicing with sets of easy Phonic readers as well a set of ten leveled readers on the topic of animals.  These leveled readers for Unit 1 can also be found on-line in the Ready Gen Reading program on savvasrealize.com.  In a few weeks I will have individual students read these books to the class using the document camera.

In Social Studies we are working on different types of goods and services we use every day in our community.  In Science we are starting a new unit on Sounds.

We will be working on the next set of sight words on the right side of the Dolch Sight Word list starting on Oct. 24th and I will be assigning them for homework for review.
