Dear Parents,
This past week second grade practiced writing Christmas cards and addressing envelopes
in my class. In their Social Studies folder they placed a sheet of a sample envelope on which
they copied their own correct home adddress and the school address. Please have your child
memorize how to write both correctly. It is an important life skill that they all need!
Dismissal is at 11:30 this Friday. We will be having Lessons and Carols at 10:00Friday.
Second grade will not be performing a song this year(Mr. Woods' decision due to limited time).
I am asking each child in second grade to bring $1.25 by Tuesday to provide for a Christmas
party on Thursday. I will be bringing in an ice cream cake and snacks.
Please be aware that second grade is not doing the Christmas show. I chose the
Spring show instead for our class. Exams in January will cover all work from the beginning
of school to the present. You may wish to begin reviewing. Study notes will be provided
when class resumes.
I want to wish you all a wonderful holiday and a healthy new year! Thanks
Ms. Saville

Dear Parents,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Please note that I will not be assigning pages in order, especially in Religion. I will be
skipping around as is necessary to cover the topics of sacrament of Reconciliation and
the church season of Advent. It is important that you follow my schedule DAILY so
that children don't do their homework without understanding. Homework should reinforce
what I have taught in class. To do the homework ahead of time or the week's work all
in one night does not benefit your child.
For the beginning of this week, I will be posting only the day's work to await any
upcoming changes. Social Studies and Religion (scroll down) for 12/1 is posted for all
classes. Ms. Saville

There is no school this Tuesday and dismissal is at 2:30 this Friday.
Second grade parents who have not yet received direction sheets for their child's Religion project
may see me this week in the morning if you can. If you cannot see me or if you prefer an
alternative, children may choose to make a collage (a poster of pictures pasted together
depicting ONE of the sacraments - see page 329). Pictures should show who is present at the
sacrament, what symbols are used, and what happens. In case too many students choose the
same sacrament, I may have to ask you to choose another; I must limit it to three.
Mr. Woods will be distributing test papers again this week on Wednesday. Parents must
sign each test and return only the Religion and Social Studies tests from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
grades to me by Monday, Nov. 17. Others test should be returned to the teacher that is
teaching those particular subjects. Thank you. Ms. Saville

Dear Parents,
Please remember to send in all Religion and Social Studies tests that Mr. Woods distributed last
week. They must be kept on file. Parents need to sign each test.
This past week I taught the Safe Environment Curriculum (SEC) to all grades and notes were
given for study for this week's test. I will finish the SEC this week along with Discover book
chapter on Violence Control. Please make sure that students from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th study
the Safe Environment notes in their Religion notebooks and the Discover book pages assigned.

This Friday is Halloween! Students in 2nd grade are allowed to come in dressed in their
costumes and each child should bring in one bag of Halloween treats to share with the class.
Homemade treats are fine if you wish . I will make a list of different types of treats and have
each child assigned one so that we can have a variety; for example chips, chocolates, lollipops.
NO bottles of soda will be allowed. Each child must bring their own small easy open plastic
juice container. Dismissal is at 2:30 this Friday. Students will come and leave in their
costume -- no changing clothes.

Note: The Safe Environment Curriculum (SEC) pages in this and last week's posts
refer to pages in the curriculum guide listed for Mr. Woods. Parents only need to refer

To Parents of Second and Third Graders

Dear Parents,
Please remember that the second and third graders will be receiving very important sacraments this year -- Reconciliation in second grade and Holy Communion in third grade.
It is very important that all children prepare themsselves by attending Mass every week.
I remind you that the gospel card due every Monday does make up part of their homework
grade and many are not doing the assignment or doing it incorrectly. Students should
write about what they hear Father READ from the Bible, which is the gospel, and not what
Father speaks about afterward which is the sermon or homily.
If you are having difficulty, you may check the church missalette or the Bible itself.
For example, the gospel for Sept. 28 comes from Matthew 21: 28-32 and is found on p. 45
in the missalette. The gospel for Oct. 5 comes from Matthew 21: 30-41 and is found on
p. 47. This Sunday's gospel, Oct. 12, comes from Matthew 22: 1-14 and is on pp. 49-50 .
We will be discussing the message of these gospels in class and in the coming weeks I will
begin giving a brief quiz on the gospel messages studied so far.
Please remember that homework is extremely important. If students rely only on
what is done in class but do not STUDY, PRACTICE, and APPLY what they are learning,
nothing can be accomplished.
There is a Book Fair this week on the second floor. Students who wish to buy should
come early with their parent so they can arrive in class by 8:00. Mr. Woods will be
distributing test papers this week to the second graders. Please return by Monday, Oct. 20.
This gives you the weekend to review errors with your child. Please remember to sign
both tests and do not change or erase any answers. Ms. Saville

9:00. Second grade students are allowed to bring one pet to be blessed at Mass but parent
must take pet back home as soon as Mass is over. I will NOT be present because Mr. Woods
has assigned some teachers to attend a workshop that morning. I will return after lunch
and classes will resume till 4:00. Dismissal is at 4:00 this Friday, Oct. 3.
I will continue to have my lesson plans on line but please check your child's purple

Welcome Back 2008

Dear Parents of Grades Second, Third, and Fourth,
Welcome to a new school year! For those of you who not able to attend our opening meeting I am sending home a set of forms that need to be filled out and two emergency cards. Please make sure that both sides of each card are completed. A supply list will be sent next week and additional notices will be sent throughout the year for whatever else will be required. Since this is my first year teaching departmental classes, it is best that I explain procedures more as the year progresses and new developments arise.
Our home room is second grade but I will be teaching Religion and Social Studies to second, third , and fourth.
