EACH STUDENT IN FOURTH GRADE WILL NEED TO BRING IN $7.00 SO MR. WOODS CAN ORDER THE BOOK  THE HOPE CHEST (272 pages) BY KAREN SCHWABACH WHICH EACH STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO READ! I will be collecting the money starting next week so please send it in as soon as possible.  Third grade will be studying the importance of conserving water and will be reading One Well: The Story of Water on Earth by Rochelle Strauss. Since this book is only a few pages long, it will be possible to make copies for each student so there is no need to buy this one.
A reminder to second graders that their Reconcilation Ceremony is scheduled for April 19th at 11:00 and for third graders their first Holy Communion is scheduled for Sunday, April 24th.  Report cards will be distributed on April 22nd and Parent-Teacher conferences will again be held from 1:00 to 7:00 that day.

Homework for March 17th and Easter Vacation

Dear Parents,
As mentioned on my previous posted blog,  on Thursday all students need to bring in sturdy bags to pack up books on Thursday. Third graders must also bring in their $3.00 for the pizza party no later than Thursday or bring something of their own to eat!  Third graders must also bring in their own individual juice containers and ONE  snack large enough to share with the class.  Suggestions will be given in class on Thursday of what to bring.

ATTENTION THIRD AND FOURTH GRADERS:
All third and fourth graders will be taking the ELA STATE TEST one day after their return from Easter vacation. All third and fourth graders have received review sheets on use of capital letters and use of transition words which have been stapled in their ELA notebooks.  I will be sending home a packet to each student of 3rd and 4th with TWO extended responses to be done based on the stories provided.  These are based on actual  sample questions given on state tests so they provide the best type of review.  I also provided a model of a sample essay including an introduction, conclusion, proper use of transtion words, and use of clearly stated factual details. "Extended responses" should be approximately as long as the model but MOST important is that students respond to the writing prompt (directions) COMPLETELY and CORRECTLY. Also, responses must be  IN THEIR OWN WORDS and BASED ON TEXT DETAILS.  There must also be reasonably good use of correct grammar. The introduction should include the name (s) of the stories in quotation marks and RESTATE the writing prompt so that the essay focuses on that prompt. The conclusion can be short and should be  based on the main idea of the essay. Students should use formal English, write COMPLETE SENTENCES, and not repeat the same information more than once!
Since I have only one day after vacation to review the completed assignment, I am not requiring more work. SO...  it is necessary that  students complete these two assignments to the best of their ability!             For any students who wish more practice I recommend working on pp. 5, 6, and 7  in Book 2 of previous ELA State Tests for short responses and proofreading activities.  The story to answer the questions in Book 2 is in the "Listening Selection." The websites are: http://www.nysedregents.org/Grade4/EnglishLanguageArts/home.html for FOURTH GRADE
and http://www.nysedregents.org/Grade3/EnglishLanguageArts/home.html for THIRD GRADE.

For Religion students should now print out the Unit 4 flash card words and definitions on www.sadlierrelgion/we believe.com for their grade and study these as well as review the words and definitions for Units 1, 2, and 3.  Assessments will be given on these when students return.

ATTENTION SECOND GRADERS:
For Easter vacation, I am  recommending strongly that SECOND GRADERS click on http://www.nysedregents.org/Grade3/EnglishLanguageArts/home.html and  print out  pp. 5, 6, 7 from Book 2 for 2010, 2009, 2008 ELA State Tests and the story in the "Listening Selection" for each year and practice answering the questions to start preparing for next year!  These give practice in answering short responses based on a story and proofreading practice in grammar.
Students will receive credit toward their grade for completing these assignments for the years 2010 to 2008, as stated above..Second graders should also review the Domain 6 (Science) notes in ELA notebook.

For Religion students should now print out the Unit 4 flash card words and definitions on www.sadlierrelgion/we believe.com for second grade and study these as well as review the words and definitions for Units 1, 2, and 3.  Assessments will be given on these when students return.

I will be listing grades for the Module 3 and Domain 4 tests as well as other work during the Easter vacation as soon as they can be corrected.  We begin Module 4 after vacation.  Second grade will continue work on Domain 6. I want to wish everyone a very Happy Easter!

Important Notices for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for March 14th

Dear Parents,
This is a reminder that this Monday, March 14th, ALL stuents will be taking their ELA Module 3B (or for 2nd Domain 4) Test.  A test covers the content for the whole module or domain and therefore is longer and is worth more points than a quiz!  Students should study the ELA notes in their notebook and especially the three  corrected quizzes I sent home since they show what skills were covered in phonics, grammar, vocabulary, and writing based on the readings we did in class.                On Monday, I will be sending home a permission slip for a trip this Tuesday, March 15th  for THIRD graders, to Mother Cabrini Shrine which is located in Inwood near our school. It is VERY IMPORTANT that all third graders bring back the permission slip signed by Tuesday morning OR they cannot be permitted to go.It is also important that all STUDENTS BE IN FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM FOR THIS TRIP!  I will also be sending home THREE corrected Religion quizzes for ALL 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders to review well for the Religion Unit Test which is scheduled for Wednesday.Parents, please sign all quizzes that are sent home -a total of six- and return them all no later than Wednesday.
On Thursday, we will be packing up and storing all books away for Easter vacation so please  send in sturdy plastic bags and let students know what you want them to take home for vacation to study. I will be sending home a "writing assignment" for all classes which I will be reviewing with students on the Monday AFTER vacation. Please be aware that the ELA State Test for 3rd and 4th grades are scheduled to begin on that same Tuesday, April 5 and lasts for three days. It includes bith reading and several writing assignments based on  giving text evidence on what they have read.
We will be having a pizza party on Friday afternoon so I am asking each student to bring in $3.00 by Wednesday so I can order.  Students may bring in their juice and snack.
I will be posting additional information in the coming week to help your students meet these challenges but it is up to the students themselves to complete the assignments and put forth the effort needed to get the good grades they want! Please keep checking the blog regularly!   Thanks.
