Beginning of the Year Message to Parents of 2nd, 3rd and 4th Graders

Dear Parents,
Welcome back! I'm looking forward to another year with many of my former students and to see their progress into the next grade. I also welcome any new students who may be joining us. Mr. Woods has asked us to post a supply list as some of you have requested.
Please see below:

  • three sharpened pencils each with an eraser on top. NO pens or sharpeners are allowed in class
  • two hardcover marble notebooks. NO spiral notebooks are allowed. One notebook should be labeled Religion and the other should be labeled Social Studies. Both notebooks should have your child's name and grade clearly printed in front.
  • one looseleaf pad which allows one sheet to be pulled out at a time. NO loose sheets or bulky binders.
  • one pack of colored pencils (10 or 12 pack) and one glue stick. NO marker or glue bottles.
  • one or two flat zippered pencil cases to hold all small items. Items should NOT be loose and NOT be kept in book bags. Crayons should also be kept in a pencil case.
  • small packs of tissues, small bottle of hand sanitizer or small packs of handiwipes. These should fit in a pencil case.
  • two plastic folders -- each with two bottom pockets and clear panels in front and back. These are available in the supply room. Other types of folders are not acceptable.
  • one SCHOOL assignment book which will be distributed in class. Please do not purchase a different one.
  • one sturdy book bag -- the one on wheels is best due to heavy books
  • one lunch box if you wish your child to bring his/her own lunch . Food may not be kept in book bags or in paper or plastic bags. No eating is allowed in classroom this year.*
  • book covers for text and workbooks. Each cover need to state student's name, grade, and subject.
  • a plastic container of disinfectant wipes to clean off desks and a roll of paper towels
  • one extra marble notebook to be labeled Vocabulary and to be used to list ALL the words and definitions give by each teacher - five per week - covering all subject areas

* Mr. Woods has decided that eating in the classroom will no longer be allowed in departmental classes since it interferes with teaching time. That means that students must eat their breakfast in the auditorium before coming to class. It also means that ALL birthday parties must be celebrated in the auditorium and ONLY during lunch time which is a forty-five minute period. Parties cannot extend beyond that time since students must be back in time for class.

When buying materials in the supply room , this must also be done before entering class and students are expected back in class no later than 8:15. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom to go downstairs alone to buy anything once they have entered the classroom!

Since we now have a library on our floor, students will be assigned times for visiting and will be issued cards for borrowing books. Children should NOT take out books from the library without permission or be in the library when they should be in class.

Below are some helpful rules:

  • Class begins at 8:00 every morning, but no child is allowed in the room until 7:45. If a child is late, parent must ask for a late pass before child can enter room. Dismissal is at 4:00 every day except Fridays. More than two latenesses during any quarter would result in no honors allowed for that period on the report card.
  • If a parent wishes to contact me, they should write a note in their child's assignment pad in the section marked "Notes"or they ask for an appointment to see me any morning at 7:45. Parents may not stop in during school hours or during lunch time.
  • Students are not allowed to come back to class after dismissal for forgotten items or books, even if they are in the after school. Parent may write a note and child may makeup homework the following day in case a book is forgotten.
  • By Fri., Sept. 11 parents should return all filled in cards or forms they have received. Students should have their supplies including above mentioned no later than Sept. 14.
  • All belongings should be labeled with your child's name. Text books and workbooks will need to be covered and clearly labeled with your child's name, grade, and subject.
  • There must be two separate folders and two separate notebooks for each teacher and each folder and notebook must be clearly marked with child's name, grade, and subject from the start to avoid confusion. Students should avoid mixing subjects in any notebook! It is very important that notebooks are kept neat, complete, and organized from the beginning since they will be taking very important notes this year. Only one notebook (one per subject) should be used for the entire year since they will need to refer to these notes to study for both mid-term and end-term exams. For my class label one folder and one notebook Religion, and the other folder and notebook Social Studies. Each should have student's full name and grade as well.
  • An absent note explaining the reason for absense is due when a student returns to class.
  • Tests are sent home periodically in a test folder. Each test must be signed by a parent and returned in the same folder.

Homework must be neat and complete and handed in on time. Each homework assignment done in the notebook should show title, date, and page of text or workbook on top of for easy reference. No notebook pages should be torn out and no other work except that assigned for the subject should be in the notebook.

I will be teaching Religion (including preparation for sacraments), Social Studies, and Handwriting (including script) this year. For report card grades an average of tests, homework, classwork, and projects is needed. One project per subject will be assigned for each quarter. DBQs (Document Based Questions) in Social Studies which include essay writing will be done twice a month to prepare students for the state test given in fifth grade. For honors on the report card Mr. Woods is also requiring an A or B in conduct so extra effort is needed on your child's part to cooperate and follow rules including being prepared for class each day.

I am looking forward to meeting you in September. Ms. Saville
