Review List for Mid Term Exams for 2nd, 3rd, 4th

Dear Parents,                                                                                 CHECK FOR UPDATES!
         Mid Term Exams will be given to all grades on Jan. 22, 23. and 24. ELA and Penmanship Exams will be on Jan. 23 and Religion on Jan. 24. Parent Teacher Conferences for Report Cards has been CHANGED to Wed. Jan. 30 instead of Thurs. This week we will begin  work on Unit 3 for ELA  but will review for Mid Term Exams as well. STUDENTS SHOULD SPEND ALL WEEK REVIEWING NOTES IN THE JOURNAL NOTEBOOK AND PRACTICE PENMANSHIP.

 FOR RELIGION STUDENTS SHOULD REVIEW ALL UNIT 1 AND 2 VOCABULARY DEFINITIONS PRINTED OUT FROM www.sadlierreligion.com FLASHCARDS AND  ALL ADDITIONAL DEFINITIONS AND ALL NOTES RECORDED IN RELIGION NOTEBOOK.

FOURTH GRADE
*Study Review Exam Vocabulary List in Journal notebook  (to be given this week)
* Recognize different figures of speech: simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole (See T chart for It Figures:Fun Figures of Speech)
*Review following poems (google to view each poem): "Dreams" by Langston Hughes, "Humanity" by Elma Stuckey, "They Were My People" by Grace Nichols, and "On the Way to School" by C. Ghigna.
*Review all notes on Love That Dog and use ofSomebody-Wanted -But- So strategy.
*Review notes on The Long Winter (recognizing descriptive adjectives & verbs ; figures of speech)
*Review of capitalization and punctuation rules (back of Speller)
*Review rewriting sentences changing common verbs and adding adjectives to make more descriptive sentences. (see ELA  text and workboook)
*Review applying the essential question: How does author's use of setting affect the plot of the story?Relate question to excerpts studied in The Long Winter.

THIRD GRADE
*Study Review Exam Vocabulary List in Journal notebook (to be given this week)
*Review notes on Ruth Heller's books Merry-Go-Round: A Book on Nouns  and  Many Luscious Lollipops: A Book About Adjectives
*Be  able to identify: chapter, setting, dialog, genre, determiner
*Be able to distinguish: concrete / abstract nouns  and  collective / compound nouns
*Be able to distinguish  demonstrative /  possessive  adjectives and  comparative / superlative adj.
*Review all notes on The Stories Julian Tells
*Review all notes on Sarah, Plain and Tall
*Review of capitalization and punctuation rules (back of Speller)
*Review on all different ways  forming plurals  (See notes for Merry-Go- Round
*Review applying essential question: Why does the sea inspire writers?
Search for examples in the book  and notes of how Sarah shows she is inspired by the sea.in Sarah, Plain and Tall.

SECOND GRADE


*Study Review Exam Vocabulary List in Journal notebook (to be given this week)
*Review notes on Frog and Toad All Year (creating who, what,,where, when, why, how
questions)
*Review notes on  Poppleton in Winter (charcters and vocabulary)
*Review use of sensory words  describing sight, sound, smell, taste, touch (textbook)
*Review use of capital letter use (textbook)
*Review distinguishing telling, asking, command, exclaiming sentences (textbook)
*Review punctuation use: ending marks (textbook)
*Review recognizing different parts of speech: adjective, noun, verb, adverb and their correct sequence in a sentence  (textbook)
*Review examples of similes (related to poem on descrbing features on a creature)
*Review examples of onomatopoeia used in poetry (identifying sounds for different actions)
*Review examples of alliteration (related to poem on an animal)
*Review writing a title, an introduction, and a conclusion correctly. Titles use capital letters!
*Review applying essential question: How can similes, onomatopoeia. alliteration be used in poetry? Practice writing a sample of each type of poem.

Fourth and third graders will be required to write in script on  a part of the  ELA Mid Term. Forming and joining letters correctly is important.  Second graders will do manuscript (printing only) but correct formation of letters and distinguishing between capital and lower case
is important.

More specific notes on what to review for Religion will be added later.
