Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for 2/25 to 3/1
Dear Parents, UPDATE: CHECK FOR REVIEW NOTES IN RELIGION!
Just a reminder to all students in each grade that the Unit 3 ELA test and Unit 3 Religion test has been rescheduled for this Thursday, Feb. 28th. All students were reminded to study well all notes in their Journal notebooks for the ELA.
Below is a list for each grade of what needs to be reviewed:
SECOND GRADE
*review filling in graphic organizers with lists in different categories
eg. listing two features, sounds, movements, habitats of a horse
eg. listing two questions for a friend, news about me, feelings to share
*know the meaning of ingredients, instructions, groceries
*know difference between literal and figurative meaning of words
*study samples of idioms and what they mean
*be able to wrote describing an animal using a graphic organizer
*be able to write a friendly letter (with all five parts) using the graphic organizer
THIRD GRADE
*know the names of different composers, artists, inventors, poets, entertainers
*know examples of interjections
* study differences between coordinating and subordinating conjunctions
*know difference between simple, compound, and complex sentences
*know how to add prefixes and suffixes to create, invent, note and create sentences for these
*be able to write about the similarities and differences between the words creative & inventive
and give examples of persons from each category
*be able to write how and why questions about your noteable person and answer these questions
FOURTH GRADE
*review the vocabulary words from Edward Lear's limericks in Nonsense
*know the difference between writing in first or third person
*review all notes on comparing types of prose, poetry, drama
*be able to write a five line limerick poem following the rules of rhthm and rhyme
*be able to write a non-fiction account of a horse, dog, or mouse
*be able to describe the character traits of the animal in a fictional book you chose to read
*be able to compare similarities and/or differences between the portrayal of the animal in a fiction and in non-fiction
Below is a list of what to review for the RELIGION Test on Feb. 28 for each class:
SECOND GRADE:
*memorize the steps of the sacrament of Reconciliation and definitions of these words: examining your conscience, confession, contrition, penance, absolution
*know the meaning of the following: free will, assembly, Last Supper, Holy Communion, Ash Wednesday, Easter Sunday, Lent, almsgiving, fasting, and tabernacle (place where the Blessed Sacrament is kept)
*be able to give examples of different sins a second grader might commit
*memorize ALL the Ten Commandments and know ways to follow them
THIRD GRADE
*know the meaning of the following terms: Ascension, Assumption, Annunciation, Pentecost, Passover, Introductory Rite, Concluding Rite
*know which are the Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing, Sacraments of Service
*know which parts of the Mass are in the Liturgy of the Word and which are in the Liturgy of the Eucharist
*know Jesus' Two Great Commandments
*be able to describe in detail the sacrament of Baptism (including purpose, people, symbols)
*know the four steps of Reconciliation that follow examining your conscience
*be able to describe what happens in your favorite parable and what lesson it teaches (see text pp.296 to 299)
FOURTH GRADE
*know the meaning of the following terms: virtue, dignity, sacred, covenant, martyr, Sermon on the Mount, almsgiving, fasting, steward, reverence, idolatry
*memorize ALL Ten Commandments and be able to explain how a fourth grader would follow each
*memorize ALL the Corporal Works and the Spiritual Works of Mercy, know the difference , and be able to describe practical ways to folllow these
*memorize ALL the Beatitudes (from the Sermon on the Mount) and be able to explain what the terms used mean

This week all classes will be starting Unit 4 which will deal with doing research in history. FOURTH grade will be doing work on heroes and events of the American Revolution in both fiction and non-fiction sources. THIRD grade will be working on the presidents and the Constitution and immigration. SECOND grade will work on writing autobiographies using a timeline followed by biographies of African Americans who fought for freedom against slavery.

Please make sure all students are checking under the correct grade for the homework assignment. There will be NO weekly quizzes this week but daily assessments will continue. All students should begin reviewing Journal Notebook notes for upcoming Unit 3 Test in ELA and all Religion Unit 3 vocabulary definitions on www.sadlierreligion Progress reports will be given out this Friday.

ELA 3/19 FINISH reading your selected fiction book on an animal character: horse, dog, or mouse. On looseleaf write a heading and write a Somebody-Wanted-But-So summary of the book. The last two dealing with the problem (BUT) and solution (So) should be three sentences EACH. Then on the same looseleaf write a paragraph of six sentences comparing this fictional animal character with the real animal facts which you researched. Be sure to edit work for correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. No script on this assignment!
REL 3/21 Memorize all Unit 3 definitions from www.sadlierreligion.com and practice answering essay questions in Religion notebook for upcoming Unit 3 test and oral daily assessments.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for 2/11 to 2/15
Dear Parents,
Last week's quizzes will be given this Monday and Tuesday: ELA on Mon. ; Religion on Tues.
Please review what was on last week's homework for ELA quiz and study all notes in Journal.)
The Religion test for 2nd grade will cover Chapters 9 and 15 (Memorize the Ten Commandments)
The Religion test for 3rd will cover Chapters 15 and 18.(Memorize the Sacraments of Initiation, Healing, and Service)
The Religion test for 4th will cover Chapters 9 and 10.(Memorize the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy)
Lent begins this week with Mass on Ash Wednesday. Mass will be at 11:00 followed by the Honors Assembly for any parents who wish to come. Dismissal will be at 12:00 this Friday. On Thursday, Valentine's Day, students should wear RED clothes and may bring in small chocolate treats (kisses, hearts,etc) to share with each other. Valentine cards and stickers can also be exchanged if you wish . I will let you know by Monday afternoon if anything else is needed.
This week 2nd, 3rd, and 4th will have a spelling quiz (ten words in section C on Fry's list sent home previously) and both 3rd and 4th will be required to write the words in script for a penmanship grade as well.

Dear Parents, PLEASE CHECK FOR UPDATE ON ELA QUIZ!
Please make sure that all test folders you were given are complete and kept in a safe place as childre will be needing to refer to them again during the school year. Last week's quizzes have been postponed to this week so last Friday's ELA quiz will be given this Tuesday and Monday's Religion (on bullying notes) quiz will be given on Wednesday. Then there will be another ELA quiz this Fri.

Then on loose leaf write a heading and give the following information: Title, Author, Names of animal characters, THREE character traits of the main animal character (citing text evidence of character displaying these traits), ONE example of personification (citing text evidence), and Summary (using somebody -wanted-but-so strategy)

Please make sure that all test folders you were given are complete and kept in a safe place as childre will be needing to refer to them again during the school year. Last week's quizzes have been postponed to this week so last Friday's ELA quiz will be given this Tuesday and Monday's Religion (on bullying notes) quiz will be given on Wednesday. Then there will be another ELA quiz this Fri.
We are now beginning the third quarter (the most important) and will be doing Unit 3 work. Please check below your child's grade to view this week's homework:

ELA 2/5 Choose a FICTION book(from the list on last week's homework) on the SAME animal you researched. Then on loose leaf write a heading and give the following information: Title, Author, Names of animal characters, THREE character traits of the main animal character (citing text evidence of character displaying these traits), ONE example of personification (citing text evidence), and Summary (using somebody -wanted-but-so strategy)
