Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for 4/39 to 5/3

Dear Parents,
         This week we are beginning Unit 5 for ELA. The homework below for each grade shows the topics we will be working on and the type of research the students should be doing. PLEASE CHECK FOR UPDATES DURING THE WEEK.

FOURTH GRADE
ELA 4/30 Tues.  Students will be choosing a star constellation in class and will need to research it using books or the internet.  Draw a picture of the constellation using white marker or crayon on black construction paper and use star stickers to mark the position of the stars of the constellation. Then answer the following questions:  Where does the constellation name come from?  What is unique or special about this constellation?   Be prepared to share your findings with the class.
There will be a Spelling test in script this Friday on 4G and 4H sets of words. ELA quiz on Friday.

REL 5/2 Thurs.  Every daily assessment this week will be based on the Review notes for the Archdiocesan Exam stapled in the notebook.  On looseleaf write the title Moral Choice.  Write one paragraph explaining how one can happy making a wrong moral choice and then a second paragraph explaining how one can feel  badly for making a good moral choice    Now that the ELA and Math State Exams are over, fourth graders need to focus their attention on reviewing well for the Archdiocesan Exam .

THIRD GRADE
ELA 4/30 Tues. Students will be choosing a planet (other than Earth) and will need to research it using books or the internet.  Students will need to create  where, when, why, and how questions
about their planet and answer each of these four questions.  The answers must be based on factual information they have found in their research and that the students can understand and explain.
There will be a Spelling test in script this Friday on 3G and 3H sets of words. ELA quiz on Friday.

REL 5/2 Thurs. Every daily assessment this week will be based on the Review notes stapled in notebook. Review ALL parts of the Mass in correct order and the correct Mass responses listed in notebook.  Choose one of Jesus' miracles.  On looseleaf write a title.  Writ a paragraph of six to eight sentences explaining in detail what happened. Research the true story and then retell it in your own words .

SECOND GRADE

REL 4/30 Tues.  Study the Review sheets in the Religion notebook.
MEMORIZE THE ACT OF CONTRITION. On looseleaf write a heading. Choose  ONE title:The Forgiving Father  or The Good Shepherd.  Write a paragraph of six sentences  The first four should explain what happens and the last two should explain what it teaches us.

ELA 5/3 Thurs.. Students should brainstorm an idea for an invention of their own. It csn be something brand new or an improvement on something that already exists. Draw a picture of your invention . Write the name of your invention as a title. Write a pargraph of 5 or 6 sentences explaining how it works. There will be a Spelling test in script this Friday on 4G and 4H sets of words. ELA quiz on Friday

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for 4/22 to 4/26

Dear Parents,
          ALL classes (2nd, 3rd, 4th) will have the Religion weekly quiz this Monday based on  REVIEW SHEET listing vocabulary words and sample essay questions for each grade. Fourth should include the Joyful Mysteries in their review. Third should include studying the new Apostles' Creed. Second should review the Act of Contrition and the sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation.
           School is closed this Friday and on Thursaday there will be Mass at 9:00.  Since the fourth grade is having the  NYS Math Exam this week on Tue., Wed.,  and Turs., I will be meeting with them on Monday only this week.  Students should continue to study and do homework however
since the archdiocesan Religion exams are soon approaching.
           Please see below for this week's homework for each grade:

 FOURTH GRADE
4/23 Tues. -No ELA homework due to state testing. 
4/25 Thurs. -Note:  Many of the previous Religion projects were carelessly done!  Please be aware that projects are worth 20% and should be done with care and attention to details.These mini projects also serve to help review for the upcoming exam!
            For this next  assignment, students should fold two sheets of blank paper into four sections.
The first sheet should be titled: Corporal Works of Mercy.  Write an example of a different corporal work in each square and draw a picture showing how you could practice this work of mercy.
Do the same with the other sheet for the Spiritual Works of Mercy  Write an example of each and
again draw a picture for each. Please look up information and complete assignment correctly and neatly.

THIRD GRADE
  There will be an ELA Quiz on Thurs. on multiple meanings words and on any research done for homework assignments.
4/23 Tues.  Using blank paper create a foldable as demonstrated in class on the Ressurection, the Ascension,and Pentecost.  On the front draw and color a picture of each event.  On the inside of each flap write four sentences for each describing what happened at each event.  Write your name on the back.
* There will be an ELA Quiz on Thurs. on multiple meanings words and on any research done for homework assignments.
4/25 Thurs. On loooseleaf write a heading. Compose a PARAGRAPH (not list) of 6 to 8 sentences on the history of immigation. Write a title and Be sure to include 4 or 5 dates (years) in which different events took place in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER.  .

SECOND GRADE
4/23 Tues. .Do research on your favorite invention of the past as explained in class.  On looseleaf  write a heading. Write the name of the invention as your title. Then number and answer the following questions:
*What is the invention and what did it do?
*Who invented it?  
*When was it invented?
*How did the invention improve peoples' lives?
*Do we still use the invention today?  If yes, how has it been updated or improved?  If no, why isn't it used or needed in today' world?
****There will be an ELA Quiz on Thurs. on writing a how to- article and on what is covered on inventions.

4/25 Thurs.  Fold a blank paper in four.  Choose either The Lost Sheep   or The Forgiving Father.
Write the title neatly at the top. Retell the story by writing a sentence in each box describing what happens in correct sequence/  Draw and color a pictire in each box to show the different scenes.
The last box should explain what the parable means.  RESEARCH INFORMATION  and  edit for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.  Due Monday.  This counts as a project!

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for 4/15 to 4/19

Dear Parents,
         This week fourth graders only will be taking the NYS English Language Arts Exam from April 16 to 18 (Tues., Wed., Thurs.). Since they are scheduled to take the test all morning and are scheduled for Math all afternoon, most likely  will not have class with them till Friday. Dismissal is at 12:00 on Friday. There will be a Religion quiz after the test is over.
         Some of the work scheduled for last week needs to be rescheduled for third grade since there was a Music class given on Tues. and Art class on Wed. as well as changes due to coach meetings.

 Please see below for this week's homework:
 
FOURTH GRADE
Tues. 4/16 -Study last set of stapled sheets on grammar/proofreading exercises.  Review ALL rules on capitalization and punctuation rules in the back of the Speller.  Answer questions attached to the reading sheets for practice.

Thurs. 4/18 -  Use  three folded blank sheets to create a booklet of six pages . Front is for the title and your name.  Then after studying  the sheet on the Beatitudes in the notebook, choose THREE BEATITUDES. On the left side of each page, copy one entire Beatitude and on the right side of
each page, write an explanation of what the key word, such as poor in spirit means (as explained in the notes). Do the same for the other two Beatitudes you choose. Do work neatly and completely using colored pencils or thin markers to create this project.STUDY THIS SHEET FOR NEXT QUIZ!

THIRD GRADE
Tues. 4/16- To understand better the lesson we will be working on, it is helpful to do some research on the topic of immigration. On looseleaf write a heading and answer the following questions:
1. What different groups of people (immigrated) came to America in the 1900's?
2. What reasons did they have for coming?
4. Where did they settle in America?
5. What kind of adjustment did they have to make?
6. What kind of challenges did they face?

Thurs. 4/18  - Study well all definitions for words listed on "Third Grade Review Notes."  On looseleaf write heading answer completely  and correctly any FOUR essay questions.  BE SURE TO LOOK UP THE ANSWERS!!!!

SECOND GRADE
Tues. 4/16 Choose a task you can do well as discussed in class. On loseleaf write a heading.
Explain the steps in correct order following the pattern below.  Be sure to incluse the title.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Graders 4/8 to 4/12

Dear Parents,
          Welcome back!  Fourth graders will be taking the NYS English Language Exam on April 16, 17, and 18 and dismissal will be at 12:00 on April 19th.  This week is regular except for adjustments in scheduling due to visits and meetings with coaches for all classes .  PLEASE SEE MY PREVIOUS  BLOGS FOR STUDY NOTES TO FOCUS ON DURING  EASTER  VACATION.

FOURTH GRADE
 Tues 4/9 ELA Click on following link: http://teachingkidsnews.com/2013/04/04/2-new-blue-jays-pitcher-wants-pit-bull-ban-to-end/  Read the story carefully. On looseleaf write your OPINION on what should happen.  Then write THREE different REASONS that you have thiis opinion and THREE DETAILS from the story  CITING EVIDENCE that support these reasons.
(Students will do a sample story in class.)  
 * BE SURE TO REVIEW THE CORPORAL AND SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY FOR QUIZ TOMORROW!

Thurs 4/11 REL Review the definitions on http://www.studystack.com/flashcard-258432.
Using a blank sheet sheet of white paper folded vertically, create a foldable (as demonstrated in class) listing each of the ten commandments correctly printed in front and cutting a slit to the fold after writing each commandment, print one way in which a fourth grader would follow that commandment
on the back half of the folded sheet (which should not be cut) under each commandment. Work should be done neatly and correctly and by the student himself.


THIRD GRADE
Tues 4/9 ELA Click on following link:
http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/tour/ Take the interactive tour visiting all TEN stations reading carefully.  Then on looseleaf write a heading.  List in CHRONOLOGICAL order SIX important events that ocurrred between 1800 and 2000. Print neatly the date and information.
(Students will do a sample exercise in class.)

Thurs. 4/11 REL Study the definitions on http://www.studystack.com/flashcard-374942.
Create a four square story map for your favorite parable by Jesus. Each square needs to have a colored picture and a one or two sentences describing what is happening in each scene. The pictures
and sentences must tell the story in correct sequence. Work must be done neatly and correctly and by the student himself.


SECOND GRADE
Tues 4/9 ELA On looseleaf write a heading.  Do a book review on a book of your choice.  Be sure to include the title of the book (underlined and in capitals), the author, your opinion, THREE reasons for your opinion citing evidence from the book  and a conclusion.

Thurs.4/11 Study the definitions of ALL vocabulary words on the review sheet.
Using the foldable given in class, finish drawing and coloring a picture for each part of Reconciliation written on the lower tabs.  The inside write a definition for each in complete sentence.  Work should be done neatly and completely and by the student himself.
