Study Guide for ELA Quiz on March 2nd


Dear Parents,
          Due to my absence last Friday, the ELA quiz will be give this Monday, March 2nd. Please review the study guide below.  The Religion quiz will be given on Friday, March 6 based on the vocabulary of Units 1, 2 ,3, and 4  flash cards on www.sadlierreligion.com. ALL STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE THEIR CARDS PRINTED OUT, WITH WORD AND DEFINITION PRINTED ON EITHER SIDE OF 3X5 INDEX CARD, AND EACH UNIT'S CARDS IN A DIFFERENT PLASTIC BAG. PLEASE BRING THESE IN SO WE CAN PRACTICE NEXT WEEK.

*Please check back on Tuesday, March 3rd for this week's homework.

FOURTH GRADE
 Study the following weekly vocabulary definitions for the quiz on Monday:
simile- comparison using like or as eg. She is like an angel.
metaphor- comparison not using like or as eg. She is an angel
idiom- expression in which meaning as a whole is different from that of the words used separately
eg. Hit the road.
emotion- strong feeling
primate- order of mammals including humans, apes, and monkeys
pachyderm- order of thick-skinned hoofed animals like  the elephant or rhinoceros
For the quiz also review the following:

*all work on ww.ixl.com  done this week on forming the past tense of regular and  irregular verbs
*information on the changes in technology of the past 25 years giving examples of  how three inventions have been improved: cell phone, television, camera.

SECOND GRADE

possessive form- showing ownership usually using an apostrophe
product- anything that is made or grown

*information on the problems African -Americans have faced including slavery, segregation, and the struggle for civil (equal) rights. Be able to give examples of people from history who have suffered these problems from work we have done in class especially Ruby Bridges, and Harriet Tubman.

ELA 2/26 Based on the book Scranimals by Jack Prelutsky studied in class, all fourth graders have been assigned to do a project due no later than March 9th. Each student must complete the following:
* Create an imaginary name for a creature that combines a plant and an animal (eg radish + shark = radishark or potato + toad  = potatotoad.
* Create a drawing of your creature that shows characteristics of both the plant and animal.
* Create a suitable habitat for that creature on a sheet of white paper. Color appropriately.
* Make up your own FOUR VERSE poem describing your creature. Be sure to describe its personality using interesting adjectives and explaining how it acts or what it does.  Be sure the poem has a rhyme scheme (eg. ABAB or AABB) and a rhythm pattern (eg. 3, 4, 3, 4). Print the poem on a separate 3x5 index card. Use a paper clip to attach it to the picture of your creature in its habitat.

HANDWRITING 2/26
 Do pp. 54, 55, and 56. Practice doing the undercurve, downcurve, and overcurve in script.  Trace over all the letters so that you practice each type of cuurve on the bottom of each page.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for 2/16 to 2/20

Dear Parents,
         Since I will be attending a workshop on Tuesday, I left  grammar review work to be done on loose leaf  using the Voyages ELA Workbook to all classes.  Any work not completed in class should be finished for homework. Pages are listed below.  Last week students began using the IXL program in a trial run.  This week I will be assigning ONE skill again to be practiced by each class.  I am assigning students to complete only the first 30 questions. Please be aware that if a student answers several questions incorrectly, the program will continue to give additional practice until he/she masters the skill. Each student should record the number of errors he makes within the set of 30. If it is over 5, students should go back and practice that skill again over the weekend or before quizzes.
Below I also listed each grade's  vocabulary definitions that should be studied this week.

FOURTH GRADE
2/17 Classwork to be completed on looseleaf:     ELA Workbook p. 27, pp. 78-79, and p. 84.
Be sure to enter your correct password and user name. Practice first 30 questions on XX1 (determining the meaning of metaphors and similes.

Vocabulary:
tense - verb form used to tell when something happens
collective noun - word that represents a group of people, animals, or things: team, flock, bouquet
climax -the high point in a story or peak of the action
tsunami- large ocean waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions
instinct- natural, unlearned behavior usually seen in animals
vibration - trembling motion

Study Guide for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for ELA Quiz on Feb. 13th.

Dear Parents,
        Please remember there is 12:00 dismissal this Friday but there will be an ELA quiz students should not miss! There is also no school on Monday and I will be absent on Tuesday since I am scheduled to go to workshop that day.  Please check the blog for homework for hoomework or updates.
        Please see below for the study guide for ELA Quiz for each grade:

 FOURTH
* Know definitions of following words:  prose, drama, and poetry (AND THE ELEMENTS OF EACH GENRE) character trait, limerick, synonym. antonym, genre, exotic, fearsome, predator.
*Study the poem "A Bird Walked Down the Walk" by Emily Dickinson. Be able explain what is happening giving text evidence.

THIRD
*Know definitions of following words: simple sentence, complex sentence, compound sentence, asking sentence, command sentence
coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, interjections, collective nouns, plural nouns,
*Review using comparative adjectives and comparative adverbs (in notebook and www.ixl.com)
**Be able to explain the changes in the main character in the book Emma's Rug by Allen Say.

SECOND
*Know definitions of following words: autobiography, biography, narrative, opinion, reasons,  time order words,
*Review the events in Henry's Freedom Box  and be able to describe them in correct sequence.
*Study the similarities and differences between the autobiography and the biography on Ruby Bridges (listed in notebook)
*Review what we studied about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
*Review multiple meaning words (same word used as noun and verb)
  eg. I had a roll for lunch.            Did you roll on the floor?

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for Week of 2/9 to 2/13

Dear Parents,                      
         Please be aware that this Friday there is 12:00 dismissal and that students are asked to dress in red to celebrate Valentine's Day.  There will be no party but there will be a bake sale and students can bring in money in a small purse.  Due to a teacher's absence this past Monday and mine on Tuesday, and  rescheduling of the Interim test to Wednesday, it will be necessary to repeat  many of last week's assignments which could not be completed. The ELA Weekly Quiz will need to be postponed until more material can be covered and notes given on the new Unit. All students were told on Friday to take home their Religion books and  to prepare for a Religion quiz instead.  Please see below:

FOURTH - RELIGION QUIZ MONDAY.  Study Chapter 2.  Memorize all the Beatitudes  and what each means. This is listed on p. 35 and in notes recorded in their Religion  notebook.

2/10 You are being given an opportunity to do over the homework on animal research BASED ON FACTS WHICH YOU HAVE LOOKED UP  if you would like a better grade! Be sure to answer all questions. This is due Wed.
Write the name of the animal as a title. Research the following information:  characteristics (fur, hooves), habitat (natural home), diet (what it eats), ways of protecting itself, natural enemies, length of life. and some interesting facts.

 We are beginning to use www.ixl.com for homework practice this week.
Log on with the username and password given to you in class so your work can be recorded. Complete only MM3 (Synonyms in context) and NN3 (Antonyms in context) about 30 questions each.


THIRD - RELIGION QUIZ MONDAY. Study Chapter 11 and 12. Review Chapter Review pages.

2/10 ELA  Research on the assigned creative or inventive person is due NO LATER THAN this Friday. Students should answer all questions below in  an essay  with title and two paragraphs including introduction and conclusion. Students should also bring in two large pictures -one of the person and another showing his work or invention.
1. When and where did the person born?
2. What were some of their most important inventions or creation? Name, describe or explain.
3. What challenges  or obstacles did they face in doing their work?
4. How has this person's work contribute to making life easier or bettter for people today?
5. When  and how did this person die?

Complete all the exercises on Capitalization  X2 only (days, months, holidays). It's about 30 questions.  Study the notes on the similarities  and differences between Ruby Bridges biography and autobiography and be ready for an assessment on this tomorrow.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for 2/2 to 2/6

Dear Parents,
         All homework assigned last Thursday is due by tomorrow due to the weather.   As stated on the school calendar, the Interim Test in ELA will be given tomorrow morning. for all grades. Students should review all ELA notes especially in grammar. Anyone who has not returned their two test folders or returned them empty need to return them with all the tests inside by tomorrow.  When students leave these at home, tests are often lost or thrown away. If this is the case, students will not be able to use these for review when the time comes. Many second graders have not returned their tests folders as they were asked to do! On Wednesday dismissal is at 12:00.  Report cards will be distributed to some. Others must come between 1:00 to 7:00 for Parent- Teacher Conferences.

THIRD GRADE        
  2/3   Third graders have been working on PBL this week and each has been assigned a saint from France. The saints were chosen from www.holyspiritinteractive.net/kids/saints/ Copy and paste this website on the address bar.  Each student needs to look up their saint on this web site based on their feast day, make a print out of their story (as shown in class), and then make a print out of an 8x11 picture of their saint to be the cover of  a book each is compiling from their various class activities. The picture, printed out story, and the definition of the five vocabulary words chosen in class on loose leaf are due by Thurs. at the latest. Most definitions can be looked on the internet and definition should be based on the meaning of the word as used in the reading passage.  Be prepared to speak about your saint!  THE PICTURE , PRINT OUT OF STORY,  AND DEFINITIONS ON LOOSELEAF ARE DUE BY THURSDAY SO WE CAN PRACTICE FOR PBL  PRESENTATION ON FRIDAY
 2/5      THE PICTURE  OF THE SAINT, PRINT OUT OF STORY,  AND DEFINITIONS ON LOOSELEAF ARE DUE BY THURSDAY SO WE CAN PRACTICE FOR PBL  PRESENTATION ON FRIDAY.
            Third graders should also continue their research on the creative or inventive person they were assigned. By Monday,all students need to answer the following questions on looseleaf about the person they researched:

 2/3   Fourth graders will be working on animals in real life compared to animals portrayed in literature.  Each fourth grader will be assigned to do research on either HORSE, DOG, or MOUSE.
On loose leaf  students write a heading.  Write the name of the animal as a title. Research the following information:  characteristics (fur, hooves), habitat (natural home), diet (what it eats), forms of protection, natural enemies, length of life. and some interesting facts.

 2/5 THE  WORK ON ANIMAL RESEARCH  IS DUE BY THIS FRIDAY. THERE WILL BE AN QUIZ ON THIS NEXT FRIDAY. FOR RELIGION BE SURE TO MEMORIZE THE BEATITUDES AND STUDY THE NOTES ON THE BEATITUDES IN THE RELIGION NOTEBOOK.
                     Next week students will be assigned to read  ONE BOOK from the list below based on that SAME animal this time as a fictional character:

SECOND GRADE
2/3  Second graders will be working on  the history of African Americans in their struggle for freedom.  Each student is assigned to watch the video on "Henry's Freedom Box" on   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CA0iNLquLZo.  Each student will be asked to write a narrative in class explaining the action in the story using a flow map.  Be prepared to discuss and write!

2/5 WE WILL WRITE THE NARRATIVE   BASED ON VIDEO ON FRIDAY AND THERE WILL BE A QUIZ NEXT FRIDAY on RUBY BRIDGES  (autobiography vs. biography: notes will be given) AND HENRY'S FREEDOM BOX.
