Suggested work to review for New York State ELA Exam for 3rd & 4th Grades
Dear Parents,
Next week fourth and third graders will be taking the NYS ELA Exam next week on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. We were reviewing ALL last week. I am suggesting an additional site that BOTH third and fourth grade students should work in order to review editing paragraphs for correct grammar before the test. Please check out http://www.englishforeveryone.org/Topics/Paragraph-Correction.htm. Work only on the "beginner" set #1 to 15. I will be giving a assessment on one of these on Monday and answer any questions students may have. This site has several exercises from least to most difficult in which students can practice proofreading paragraphs and then correct themselves using the provided answer key.
Fourth grade students should also continue to work on answering the written response questions following the readings on http://www.nysedregents.org/grade4/englishlanguagearts/home.html.
Third grade students should also continue working on the written response questions following the readings on http://www.nysedregents.org/grade3/englishlanguagearts/home.html. Work especially on those that require the longer written responses. Students should make a habit of underlining the key words that tell what the QUESTION is asking, so they don't get side tracked answering what is NOT being asked. Students must explain in their own words and the GIVE DETAILS FROM THE TEXT to support their answers. Practice but take breaks to relax and get a good night's sleep!

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th for 3/21 through 3/28
Dear Parents, UPDATED AGAIN on 3/26
Next week there will be NO weekly quizzes in order to give students an opportunity to review for the New York State ELA Exam which requires three days of testing on long passages of reading, answering questions, completing graphic organizers, proofreading passages for correct capitalization and punctuating, and most important writing essays of two or three paragraphs in response to non-fiction and sometimes fictional stories and poetry. The homework will consist of reviewing and practicing for this exam. Religion classes are also cancelled to review for this exam but will be made up after the exam.
I strongly recommend that both third and fourth graders practice doing the previous TWO years sets of tests: Books 1 , 2, and 3 over the weekend and throughout next week. The story for Book 2 can be found in the Listening selection. These tests can be printed out! All students should practice WRITING the follow up essays as well checking for complete sentences, capitalization, and punctuation as well. The most important thing to remember if that students answer EACH and ALL questions with correct information and always citing correct evidence from the text. See below for sites:
FOURTH GRADE: http://www.nysedregents.org/grade4/englishlanguagearts/home.html
THIRD GRADE: http://www.nysedregents.org/grade3/englishlanguagearts/home.html
Daily assessments will be given to third and fourth based on questions from the sites above!
SECOND GRADERS Next Thursday, March 27th, second graders who are in the program will be celebrating FIRST RECONCILIATION at 11:00 .Only the students who are at Reconciliation that day will be allowed to be picked up by their family after the ceremony to celebrate with their families . All students MUST know the Act of Contrition in their notebook (and text book) . They should also practice the introductory prayer, "Bless me Father for I have sinned, this is my first confession" in their Religion notebook and the TEN COMMANDMENTS and wha t each commandment means: how we obey it or disobey it.
On Monday, all students receiving Reconciliation will be taken to church for a practice at 9:30.
Please check back by Tuesday night for this week's homework for all classes.
A Book Fair is taking place this week. It is best if students decide which book or books they wish to buy and bring in the correct amount each day. Some titles I would suggest to help with the test practice are US Presidents ($9.00), Heroes for All Times (6.00), Mythology ($8.00)
What Was the Underground Railroad? ($6.00), Who Was King Tut? ($5.00), Disasters ($9.00)and the I Survived series (Battle of Gettysburg), (Nazi Invasion), (Japanese Tsunami) each $5.00.

Homework for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Grades for March 17 to 21 UPDATED FOR THURSDAY
Dear Parents,
It has come to my attention that some parents may be concerned that I am no longer posting the week's homework ahead of time on the weekend. Please remember that I am only scheduled to assign homework on Tuesdays and Thursdays.. This gives me a chance on Monday to introduce the topic and make sure students clearly understand the assignment. It also give students an opportunity to work on their other subjects on Monday and Wednesday. On Fridays and the weekend students may review whatever subjects they wish. If students do the work ahead of time or delay and do it late, it interferes with their work on the other subjects. Usually Thursday's homework must be given in on Friday.
