***This Friday the second grade will be having a Halloween party in our classroom after lunch. All students should come dressed in their costumes and will go home the same way. I will be ordering pizza for the class and will bring in different chips as well . I am asking that each student bring in $1.50 on Tuesday to cover the price of these. Students need to bring in their own small cartons or packs of juice (no large bottles allowed). Each student will also need to bring in one large or two small packs of candy to share with each other and with the pre -k classes that will enter our class during their yearly parade. Each student should also bring a trick or treat bag or hollow pumpkin to hold the treats they will be taking home.
*** This Monday second grade students will also be receiving instruction sheets for doing a Religion project. They will have two weeks to complete this project. It is very important that students do not lose these sheets and they are returned the day they bring in their project. Since most students will be working on different projects based on the Bible stories covered, if one wishes to switch project sheets with another student, that would be no problem. Only two major projects of this type will be assigned this year - one for each subject. These projects will be displayed in class and used as part of our lessons. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. Ms. Saville

Letter to ALL Parents for 10/19 to 10/23

Dear Parents,
This week I will continue to give the ITBS and CoGat tests to the 4th graders on Tues. through Thurs. mornings. During the rest of the week I will be working on finishing up the DBQ with follow-up essays due for the months of Sept. and Oct. (This work has had to be rescheduled since the DBQ booklets arrived in Oct. and the copy machine has had problems.) Work in this area of must be kept on file in Social Studies portfolios so students can see corrections and grades in class and parents can ask to see them at report card meetings but DBQ work must be kept in school. This week Mr. Woods has asked that students review ALL past vocabulary words in the notebook for a cumulative review test this Friday. Below are the words that should be reviewed in the Social Studies and Religion areas: commandents, creation, apostles, Incarnation,
Sanctus, parables, miracles, psalms, miracles, psalms, blessed, compassion; geography, history, culture, coast, symbol, community, urban, suburb, rural, climate.
I will not assign homework again this week due to state testing but am asking that all students review all Social Studies and Religion notes in these notebooks for cumulative tests next week. Also I am asking that all students begin work on the projects assigned this week which will be due next week as well. Instructions on how these projects should be done will be explained in class. (Please check purple assignment book this week.) Students from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th will need to buy a pack of construction paper (loose sheets - not tear off pad) and keep this pack at home so they can use the sheets for projects that will be assigned in both subjects. At least three projects will be required for each subject for each marking period. Please be aware that PROJECTS: including DBQ's (all grades), Map of the Month (only in 4th), Foldable creations (for all grades-these will be explained this week), and related art work will account for 30% of their total grade.
Parent I also suggest that you keep old shoe boxes that may be needed for future projects.
Thank you for your attention in these matters. Ms. Saville

*Parents please be aware that I will be giving the ITBS and CoGat tests to the fourth grade class. Ms.Larios will be testing the second grade class and Mr. Badhia will test the third.

** Parents please be aware also that upcoming tests in both Social Studies and Religion will
require students to answer essay questions in paragraphs of at least six sentences each.
Questions will require that students study their notebook notes (especially in Religion)
and to practice answering multiple part questions that will be listed in their notebooks.
This is in an effort to prepare students of third and fourth grade who will be taking the Archdiocesean Religion exam in June! To get a sample of the type of questions that will
be asked please click on Third grade Religion or Fourth grade Religion lesson plan for this week.
Writing in these areas will be taught in incremental steps often following an organizer to
keep students focused on the topic. The work students do on their DBQ essays in Social
Studies must be kept on file in portfolios but can be seen by parents at report card meetings
if requested. Ms. Saville

Letter to Parents of 2nd, 3rd, 4th 10/5-9

Dear Parents,
As I reviewed homework this past week, I noted some students are still having trouble following directions. This is a very important skill in training students to take exams and especially state tests. I make an effort to be very specific in explaining how and where homework should be done so PLEASE read the assignment book (and Homework for the week on blog) carefully. Some tips: Students should never copy the questions and should answer in sentences only when asked. Students should do work in correct notebook or on looseleaf as directed. Students should copy words correctly, answer ALL parts to every question, include titles when asked. Students should not write more than what is required. More is not better especially in summarizing. On state tests students are usually asked to answer a question that has two or three parts and lose points for not answering every part. They are also asked to choose three out of four questions to answer and often lose points and waste time by doing more and not following directions.
Daily homework if done correctly can be an excellent opportunity for practicing these skills.

Vocabulary words for all classes for this week are:
parables- stories with a message that Jesus told
miracles- acts beyond human power that Jesus performed
psalms- songs of praise to honor the Lord- found in the Bible
blessed- made holy in God's name
compassion- ability to share another's feelings; sympathy or pity

Mr. Woods will be distributing test papers this week. Each test should be signed and returned by Tues., Oct. 13 still stapled together to avoid confusion. Thank you.

Letter to Parents of All Students for Sept. 20 to 25

Dear Parents of Students of 2nd, 3rd,and 4th graders:
The following letter is meant to clarify any concerns you may be having this year.
Now that most books are covered and all notebooks have been brought in, the problem of heavy book bags hopefully will lighten up. Children now will only be taking home the books necessary for their homework. Since there is no homework assigned on Fridays, students may take home whatever book you feel they most need to review over the weekend.
If any parent needs to see me, please make an appointment through the office for any day between 7:45 and 8:00 and if you have a quick question I usually arrive in the auditorium about 7:30 (or you may write me a note in your child's purple assignment book), but
I cannot call you during school hours and calling you from home is not allowed. In case of something urgent, please call the office to contact me.
In regard to corrected homework, the school policy is to grade each assignmennt as 100 , 50, or 0. Perfect or with minor errors is marked as 100. No homework, wrong page, or late homework (unless I receive a parent note that day) is marked as 0. Not following directions or incomplete homework is marked as 50. Examples of not following directions are: not answering in complete sentences or not writing a full heading on looseleaf when it is stated in the
homework. It is important for homework to be done in the correct notebook to avoid confusion and notebooks should never be left at home! Headings should NOT be written in the notebook and students should never copy the questions -- it's a waste of time.
Answers should be in complete sentences if it is stated in the homework.
Students will be assigned 15 vocabulary words per week (5 from each teacher) to study for a test each Friday. A definition for each word will be copied in class in their vocabulary notebooks. EACH STUDENT SHOULD HAVE ONLY ONE VOCABULARY NOTEBOOK! Students need to study the meaning of the words, not their spelling. Starting next week, Mr. Woods said the SAME words will be assigned to all three classes. Last week I gave Social Studies words so this week it will be Religion.
For Sept. 21 to 25 , the vocabulary words for 2nd, 3d, and 4th are :
commandments, creation, apostles, Incarnation, Santus. Some work planned for last week had to be repeated due to unscheduled meeting and switching of classes being cancelled on Friday morning.
Please click on your child's grade to see this week's homework in Social Studies and Religion. Thank you. Ms. Saville

Beginning of the Year Message to Parents of 2nd, 3rd and 4th Graders

Dear Parents,
Welcome back! I'm looking forward to another year with many of my former students and to see their progress into the next grade. I also welcome any new students who may be joining us. Mr. Woods has asked us to post a supply list as some of you have requested.
Please see below:

  • three sharpened pencils each with an eraser on top. NO pens or sharpeners are allowed in class
  • two hardcover marble notebooks. NO spiral notebooks are allowed. One notebook should be labeled Religion and the other should be labeled Social Studies. Both notebooks should have your child's name and grade clearly printed in front.
  • one looseleaf pad which allows one sheet to be pulled out at a time. NO loose sheets or bulky binders.
  • one pack of colored pencils (10 or 12 pack) and one glue stick. NO marker or glue bottles.
  • one or two flat zippered pencil cases to hold all small items. Items should NOT be loose and NOT be kept in book bags. Crayons should also be kept in a pencil case.
  • small packs of tissues, small bottle of hand sanitizer or small packs of handiwipes. These should fit in a pencil case.
  • two plastic folders -- each with two bottom pockets and clear panels in front and back. These are available in the supply room. Other types of folders are not acceptable.
  • one SCHOOL assignment book which will be distributed in class. Please do not purchase a different one.
  • one sturdy book bag -- the one on wheels is best due to heavy books
  • one lunch box if you wish your child to bring his/her own lunch . Food may not be kept in book bags or in paper or plastic bags. No eating is allowed in classroom this year.*
  • book covers for text and workbooks. Each cover need to state student's name, grade, and subject.
  • a plastic container of disinfectant wipes to clean off desks and a roll of paper towels
  • one extra marble notebook to be labeled Vocabulary and to be used to list ALL the words and definitions give by each teacher - five per week - covering all subject areas

* Mr. Woods has decided that eating in the classroom will no longer be allowed in departmental classes since it interferes with teaching time. That means that students must eat their breakfast in the auditorium before coming to class. It also means that ALL birthday parties must be celebrated in the auditorium and ONLY during lunch time which is a forty-five minute period. Parties cannot extend beyond that time since students must be back in time for class.

When buying materials in the supply room , this must also be done before entering class and students are expected back in class no later than 8:15. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom to go downstairs alone to buy anything once they have entered the classroom!

Since we now have a library on our floor, students will be assigned times for visiting and will be issued cards for borrowing books. Children should NOT take out books from the library without permission or be in the library when they should be in class.

Below are some helpful rules:

  • Class begins at 8:00 every morning, but no child is allowed in the room until 7:45. If a child is late, parent must ask for a late pass before child can enter room. Dismissal is at 4:00 every day except Fridays. More than two latenesses during any quarter would result in no honors allowed for that period on the report card.
  • If a parent wishes to contact me, they should write a note in their child's assignment pad in the section marked "Notes"or they ask for an appointment to see me any morning at 7:45. Parents may not stop in during school hours or during lunch time.
  • Students are not allowed to come back to class after dismissal for forgotten items or books, even if they are in the after school. Parent may write a note and child may makeup homework the following day in case a book is forgotten.
  • By Fri., Sept. 11 parents should return all filled in cards or forms they have received. Students should have their supplies including above mentioned no later than Sept. 14.
  • All belongings should be labeled with your child's name. Text books and workbooks will need to be covered and clearly labeled with your child's name, grade, and subject.
  • There must be two separate folders and two separate notebooks for each teacher and each folder and notebook must be clearly marked with child's name, grade, and subject from the start to avoid confusion. Students should avoid mixing subjects in any notebook! It is very important that notebooks are kept neat, complete, and organized from the beginning since they will be taking very important notes this year. Only one notebook (one per subject) should be used for the entire year since they will need to refer to these notes to study for both mid-term and end-term exams. For my class label one folder and one notebook Religion, and the other folder and notebook Social Studies. Each should have student's full name and grade as well.
  • An absent note explaining the reason for absense is due when a student returns to class.
  • Tests are sent home periodically in a test folder. Each test must be signed by a parent and returned in the same folder.

Homework must be neat and complete and handed in on time. Each homework assignment done in the notebook should show title, date, and page of text or workbook on top of for easy reference. No notebook pages should be torn out and no other work except that assigned for the subject should be in the notebook.

I will be teaching Religion (including preparation for sacraments), Social Studies, and Handwriting (including script) this year. For report card grades an average of tests, homework, classwork, and projects is needed. One project per subject will be assigned for each quarter. DBQs (Document Based Questions) in Social Studies which include essay writing will be done twice a month to prepare students for the state test given in fifth grade. For honors on the report card Mr. Woods is also requiring an A or B in conduct so extra effort is needed on your child's part to cooperate and follow rules including being prepared for class each day.

I am looking forward to meeting you in September. Ms. Saville

Letter to Parents 5/26 - 5/29

Dear Parents, This week's blog contains review work for end term exams which will be
given in June. I will spend much of this week in class reviewing as well. The Social Studies
tests for all three grades will contain a DBQ (Document Based Questions used for writing
an essay). The third and fourth grades only will be taking the exams from the Archdiocese
of New York in Religion.
All the definitions and other information your students need to review
are in their notebooks. Textbooks can be consulted as needed but the notes (especially in
Religion) are most important. The reference sections in the back of the texts, however, can
also be helpful in reviewing the year's work.
I will be returning all test papers this week and I ask that they all be
signed and returned no later than Monday, June 1st. Mr. Woods has a Religion and a
Social Studies formative assessment test for 2nd grade that has not yet been returned
for distribution. The formative assessment tests I made up are designed to give students
a sample of what types of questions students will be expected to answer on mid and end
term exams so any tests of this kind returned should be reviewed as well.
Please check your child's homework assignment book for any
additional homework or notices. All students should bring rosary beads this week.
Dismissal is at 2:30 this Friday. Thank you.
