Homework for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grades 2/1 - 2/5

Dear Parents,

As we begin the second half of the school year, I feel it is necessary to clarify a few rules and procedures that must be enforced in the next quarters. Since it is very important for students to develop study skills, I will be assigning two study assignments as well as two writtten assignments for each subject each week for homework. Each student will be called on to give oral responses based on the material assigned for study and his/her response will be recorded both as a homework and as a classwork grade since it calls for class participation. This is done in an effort to show students the need for consistant studying throughout the year and will make it easier to prepare for tests.

It is especially important for students who are out of class for Title 1 services during Social Studies to do these assignments since they are responsible for completing all the work assigned each week including doing homework, copying notes, and taking tests. The homework is posted on the blog prior to Monday each week so that students can view ahead of time what needs to be done. If a student is out of class when questions are asked, they will be called to respond on the following day that they are present. In the case of a student being absent, he/she has ONE DAY to make up the work. A blank space will be left next to his/her name and it will be the student's responsibility to show me that he/she has completed the written assignment the day after his return. Failure to do so must be recorded as a zero. Please be aware also that any work turned in late cannot be accepted!

Besides oral class participation, the classwork grade will also include meaningful art work and a written assignment related to the topic. This is done in an effort to give each student an opportunity to express his/her learning of a topic in different forms (oral, art, written).
Students are encouraged to practice at home how to prepare for these assignments but the actual work will be done in class to ensure that students are working independently. A simple example would be: (oral) Explain what happens a Baptism. (art) Draw a picture of the symbols and persons present at Baptism. (written) Write a paragraph explaining how and why we celebrate Baptism.

As a rule we were told that Monday's first period is for the homeroom teacher to have his/her class copy the fifteen weekly vocabulary definitions in their notebooks. This week, however this will be postponed till Tuesday since Open House is scheduled for Monday. During Open House hours -9:00 to 11:00- I will be working on DBQ's in Social Studies . Since all students are required to take a state Social Studies Exam in 5th grade (in Nov.) which includes answering DBQ's and essay writing, I will be working on these in an effort to show parents what is required in helping to prepare students for that exam. Students will need to bring their paragraph organizers, looseleaf, and pencils with good erasers.

Due to a need to meet various times last week to prepare report cards, work in both Social Studies and Religion had to be rescheduled to this week. This week there may also be some changes due to time needed for the photography.
Some important reminders for this week:
