Homework for 2/18 to 2/21 for 2nd, 3rd, 4th grades

Dear Parents,
         The ELA quiz as well as the Spelling/ Penmanship quiz  are rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19th for each grade. Please see below for the study guide under each grade.  I will also be retesting students on the spelling words below since they did not have enough of an opportunity to study for it the previous time.  Please make sure that students review well now that they DO have the time (after Valentine, of course).  THIS IS THE THIRD QUARTER AND THE LAST CHANCE FOR STUDENTS TO DO THEIR BEST.  There is a full day of school on Friday-NO early dismissal!
******THERE WILL BE ANOTHER WEEKLY ELA QUIZ ON FRIDAY, FEB. 21st. FOR ALL GRADES!


FOURTH  GRADE :       
                  FOR QUIZ REVIEW FF TERMS: PROSE, POETRY, DRAMA AND ALL THE ELEMENTS LISTED UNDER EACH IN THE NOTES.  REVIEW NON-FICTION INFORMATION ABOUT THE ANIMAL YOU RESEARCHED SUCH AS CHARACTERISTICS, HABITAT, ETC.   KNOW THE TITLE  AND AUTHOR OF THE FICTIONAL BOOK YOU READ AND BE ABLE TO SUMMARIZE IT.

                  Practice the spelling of the following words IN SCRIPT: business. especially, experience,  familiar,  favorite, interrupt, lightning, necessary, opposite, realize, scissors, strengthen.

THIRD GRADE:
                 FOR QUIZ REVIEW ALL PAGES STARRED IN THE NOTEBOOK. BE ABLE TO GIVE EXAMPLES OF COODINATING CONJUNTIONS, SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS, AND DIFFERENT TYPES OF ADVERBS.  REVIEW HOW TO WRITE SIMPLE, COMPLEX, AND COMPOUND SENTENCES.

                     Practice the spelling of the following words IN SCRIPT: another, believe, caught, does, especially, friendly, important, question, thought, usually, ready, knew.

SECOND GRADE:
                 FOR QUIZ REVIEW DIFEFERENCE BETWEEN TALL TALE, BIOGRAPHY,AUTOBIOGRAPHY. REVIEW  FACTS ON RUBY BRIDGES, HARRIET TUBMAN, ROSA PARKS.  REVIEW THE POEM  ON LINE  "HARRIET TUBMAN " BY ELOISE GREENFIELD.  REVIEW ALL SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE BIOGRAPHY AND AUTOBIOGRAPHY ON RUBY BRIDGES IN THE ELA NOTEBOOK.

                         Practice the spelling of the following words:  won't, didn't, haven't, it's, she's, he'd, you're, I'm, I've, they've.

               The following homework is due on Friday, Feb. 21.  THIRD and FOURTH graders will be taking the Archdiocesan Exam in just few months. It is important that they practice answering
 sample questions in order to prepare for it.  Students need to look up or research, not just guess!

FOURTH:



For Friday's ELA Quiz study ff. terms:  reasons for one's  point of view, narrative, first or third person narration. Study all notes on limericks, prepositional phrases, and Scranimals.




On loose leaf write a heading.  Answer the following questions in complete sentences. (Do not copy the questions!) 
1.Making moral choices is very important in Christian life.
(a)Name five different steps you learned for making a good moral choice.  (See Religion notes)
(b)Describe a time when you or someone you know had a difficult decision to do what is right.

2.This year you studied the lives of some saints.
(a) Name one saint and describe what he did that shows why he is considered a saint.
(b) Explain how a fourth grader can imitate this saint in living a Christian life.

3. The eighth commandment tells us to honor the truth.
(a) Why is it important to keep a promise?  Give an example.
(b) Describe a situation in which a promise should be broken. Explain why.





THIRD



For Friday's ELA Quiz know names of different artists, inventors, composers. Review irregular verbs in the present, the past, and form used with a helping verb. Review coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and the difference between simple, complex, and compound sentences.  Review the research you did on your creative or inventive person and be able to name examples of his work.  Review writing introductions and conclusions.






On loose leaf write a heading.  Answer the following questions in complete sentences. (Do not copy the questions!) 
1.(a) Name and describe your favorite parable in 4 to 5 sentences.
(b) What is the lesson of the parable?

2. (a)Name the three Sacraments of Initiation.
(b) Describe one of THESE sacraments. Be sure to explain its purpose, people present, and symbols.

3.(a) Write Jesus' Two Great Commandments.
(b) Write an example of how you can follow each of these commandments.



SECOND
For Friday's ELA Quiz study ff. terms: category, sequence, invention, diagram, label, time order words, instructions, directions.  Review use of commas (see website).  Review notes on writing a how to- paragraph including introduction, four sentences with time order words, and a conclusion.


The following will count as a project grade!  Prepare a compare/contrast storyboard by taping two sheets of  light colored construction paper side by side. Choose a commandment.  Find and print a good  picture (placing it to the left side) that shows how you  obey the commandment. Write three sentences under the picture explaining how you obey it..  Then find and print  a good picture that shows how you disobey this same commandment (placing it on the right side). Write three sentences under this picture explaining how you disobey it.  Draw lines under each picture and write NEATLY using capital letters and correct punctuation and use complete sentences. Be ready to tell us about your work next Friday, Feb. 21.
