Homework for Jan. 29 to Feb. 2 for Class 1-2

Dear Parents,
          Just a reminder this week Open House is 9 to 11 on Monday for anyone who wishes to visit. Wednesday is the Religion Fair.  Thursday report cards will be distributed. Friday we have 12:00 dismissal and Parent Teacher Conferences will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 pm in the Science room.

Lesson Plan

Homework for Jan. 29
Math - Do  pp. 8. 9. and 10. Use the paper strip in folder.
Phonics - Read p. 125 and do pp. 126 and 127.
ELA Writing Test is tomorrow. Students should review Far From Home and Going to School  on www.pearsonrealize.com (see card in folder for login info).  Choose ONE character from either book and think how their experiences at school are  alike and also how they are different from your experiences at school.
*Today all students took the on-line ELA tests to complete Unit 2. So quizzes will be sent home tomorrow after taking the ELA Writing Test. All tests must be signed and returned by Thursday.

Homework for Jan. 30
Math - Do pp, 15, 16, and 17.
Phonics - Do pp. 128, 129, and 130.
**Please sign each test sent home and return by Thursday: three Phonics, one Math, one Science, one Social Studies, one ELA Writing Test (on loose leaf), one Religion.
***Those who missed Handwriting need to do pp. 30-31 (Gg) by Friday.

Homework for Jan. 31
Phonics - Do pp. 131 and 132.
Religion- In Reflections workbook do pp. 10 and 11. Be sure to follow the directions. Write THREE complete sentences under your picture.
Social Studies - In notebook copy and study the following words with their definitions:
1. citizens- people who are members of a community, state, or country
2. laws- rules for a community, state, or country
3. leader - person who is in charge of things
4. petition- a special letter that many people sign
5. city council- a group of citizens who run the city and meet to talk about city problems

6. vote- to choose something
7. tax- money people pay to the community for things everyone uses
8. order- telling what happens first, next, then last

***You have until Friday to finish writing these definitions and study for a short assessment.
***No Math homework tonight!

Homework for Feb. 1
REPORT CARDS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AT 1:30 TODAY
Math - Do pp. 21, 22, and 23. Use cubes given in class and return them by tomorrow.
Phonics - Read pp. 135-136. Do pp. 137-138.
*** Make sure you have finished copying the Social Studies definitions in notebook. Study them for a short assessment. Handwriting up to p. 31 should have been completed. All due this Friday.
***If you did not send in tests signed, please remember to send them in by Friday since there is no school on Monday!
***This Thurs. and Fri. I will be reviewing the questions from the ELA tests that your children took on-line so they understand what they got wrong and why. We will be starting  Unit 3 in ELA next week.

Homework  for Feb. 2  
NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY!
Math- Do pp. 27, 28, 29. READ CAREFULLY!!!!
Religion - Study Chapter 9  pp. 108 to 118 for quiz next week. Be able to explain the lesson of the parable of the Good Shepherd.
Social Studies- Study definitions in notebook: citizens, laws, leader, petition. city council, vote, tax, order.  The definitions for the last three words are listed above and should be added to the same notebook page. Be able to give an example of a community problem mentioned in the text and some things the people did (in correct order) to solve the problem. Quiz next Friday!

***ELA- I have assigned the next reader we are studying for Unit 3: The Winner's Choice (interactive version) so students can review it at home on www.pearsonrealize.com
.  I have also assigned five leveled readers: I Have a Dollar, At the Market, A Healthful Meal, Which Way Is Better? and Trading This for That.  Students should begin reading these books.  NEXT WEEK students will be asked to choose any three of these leveled readers and answer the questions in the back of each book in COMPLETE SENTENCES.  This week end just read them. To find the books first sign in correctly. Click on Classes.  Scroll down and click on #2 .  Each of the titles will appear.

*** Any one who missed Handwriting today must do pp. 32 and 33. Just follow all directions. TWO complete sentences are required on p. 33

Homework for Jan. 22 to 26 for Class 1-2

Dear Parents,
         Our Religion Fair is next Wed., Jan. 31.  We are preparing a display board on Jesus'  miracles.  I am sending home four reading selections for them to read and study. There will be several quizzes this week: Religion on Tues.,  Math on Wed., and Science on Fri.  Please keep checking the blog for updates.  Remember that there is 12:00 dismissal this Mon.

Homework for Jan. 22
Math - Do pp.  117 and 118. PLEASE DON'T DO TILL I TEACH THE LESSON ON MONDAY!
Phonics - Read pp. 117-118. Answer pp. 119 and 120. SKIP  pp 115-116.
Religion - Quiz on Tuesday.  Study Chapter 8 especially p. 103 meaning of different parts of prayer. Be able to write about one of Jesus' miracles.

Homework for Jan. 23
Math - Do pp. 121 and 122. Look at work done on previous pp. 119-120 as a guide.
*** Study all exit tickets 22 to 29 and workbook pp.  91 to 122 for Math End of the Module Assessment tomorrow.
ELA - Study the meaning of the following vocabulary words in the notebook:
1. countries - nations; places on a map or globe
2.  villages- towns; small areas where people live
3. community- neighborhood
4. languages- ways to communicate; English, Spanish, French. Italian
5. weather- sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, snowy
6. native- related to a country
***Anyone who missed Handwriting today must do pp. 22-23 by this Friday!
***ALL FIRST GRADERS had their vision checked today.  Some students got envelopes regarding the results.  Please ask if your child received one.

Homework for Jan. 24
Math- Review all exit tickets 22 to 29 and workbook pp. 91 to 122 for End of Module Test.  I decided to postpone the test one day in order to give all more time to review better. The test is difficult and covers many skills!
Phonics- Do pp. 121 and 122.  On p. 122 write THREE complete sentences.
Science- Review last page of Science definitions in notebook for quiz on Friday.
*** Those who missed Handwriting must do pp. 24, 25, 26, 27 by this Friday!

Science - STUDY WELL all Science definitions in the notebook for QUIZ tomorrow: wind, cloud, temperature, thermometer, season, drought, blizzard, forecast, hurricane.  Be sure you know the steps of the water cycle in correct order, and the correct order of the seasons.  Be able to explain how we made a thermometer in our lab period.
Phonics - Read p. 125.  Do pp. 126 and 127.
No Math tonight!
*Please check that your children have TWO ALREADY SHARPENED PENCILS WITH ERASERS, dry erase markers THAT WORK and a set of sharpened colored pencils EVERY DAY! Thank you!

Homework for Jan. 26
ELA- Reading Quizzes must be given on Monday.  Be sure to study well all ELA vocabulary definitions in the notebook:  countries, villages, community, neat, enjoy, strange, diagram, library, ballet, synonym, antonym, language, native.  Be sure to study RWJ pp. 115, 122, and 134.
Students should also read Far From Home and Going to School  on www.pearsonrealize.com (see card in folder for login info).  Choose ONE character from either book and think how their experiences at school are  alike and also how they are different from your experiences at school.
Math - Do pp. 3 and 4 in new workbook.

Homework for Jan. 16 to 19 for Class 1-2

Dear Parents,
         This week all first grade students will be taking the MAP test in Math on Wed. and Reading on Thurs.  Please continue to practice on www.student.frontrowed.com to prepare for these tests. The Social Studies Quiz will be given on FRIDAY so that students can concentrate on practicing for the MAP testing. Due to a long faculty meeting last week, some work had to be rescheduled and some adjustments may need to be made this week due to the MAP testing. Total focus is required on these tests!

ELA- Study for Map Reading test tomorrow. Below is a list of skills we have worked on in Reader's Writer's Journal that you can review at home as we did in class.
*the difference between telling sentences which end with a period and asking sentences which end with a question mark (pp. 24, 26)
*which words begin with a capital letter: first word of any sentence, names of people or animals (p. 32), names of months (p. 85), names of special places (China)
*recognizing nouns (names of person, place, or thing) and verbs (words that show action) p. 43
*difference between proper nouns and common nouns (p. 49)
*verbs matching nouns: The dog barks.  The dogs bark.  (p. 58)
* using commas to separate: The colors are red, white, and blue.  (pp. 78 and 92)
*present, past, future tense of verbs (pp. 80 and 95) eats- present, walked- past, will wait-future
*adding quotation marks around what a person says: "Come here," Tillie said. (p. 87)

*MAP testing is over!  No Math homework till tomorrow!
Social Studies - Quiz tomorrow.  Study text book pp. 112, 113, 114.  Be sure you know definitions of all seven vocabulary words (see key words in blue on pp. 86 to 109).  There will be questions on following routes, using flow chart, and sorting things into groups.
Phonics -Do pp. 108, 109, and 110.

Homework for Jan. 19 
Math- Do pp. 113 and 114 in the workbook.  Look at the previous pp. 111-112 done in class as a model. Review corrected homework pages for End of Module Test next week.
Phonics- Do pp. 111, 112, and 113.
Religion- quiz next week. Study Chapter 8.  Study the meaning of each part of the Lord's Prayer on p. 103. DO NOT do the Chapter Review.

Homework for Jan. 8 to 12 for Class 1-2

Dear Parents,
        If all goes according to plan, all first graders will be taking the MAP test in Math on Jan. 17 and in Reading on Jan. 18 so there is one more week to review. There will be a Social Studies quiz on Friday based on Unit 3 after visitors leave.

Math - Answer workbook pp. 93 and 94.
Phonics- Answer pp. 94, 95, and 96. Read pp. 97-98.
***Corrected quizzes  distributed today, Tuesday, need to be signed by a parent and returned by Friday. These tests include 2 Math, 1 Religion, 1 Phonics, and 1 ELA (on looseleaf). Those students who have not yet read and answered questions for two Science and two Social Studies articles on www.student.frontrowed.com need to do so!
***I have assigned the trade books Far From Home and Going to School  that we are presently studying in class so you can view them online at home on www.peasonrealize

Homework for Jan. 10th
Math - Answer workbook pp. 97 and 98.  Follow directions!
Phonics- Answer pp. 99 and 100.
ELA - Study the meaning of the following words in the notebook:
1. tidy - neat
2. perfect - best, ideal
3. tucked - hidden, pushed in
4. strange - unusual, odd
5. shocked - surprised
***Students may wear play clothes this Thursday but on Friday all students MUST be in full school uniform!
***Those who did not complete or do their Handwriting this morning need to do pp. 12, 13, and 16.

Homework for Jan. 11th
Math - Answer workbook pp. 101 and 102. Remember to label both parts. Put square around answer. Write subtraction sentence this time.
Phonics - Answer pp. 101 and 102. Follow directions. Write two complete sentences on p. 102.
***Social Studies Quiz is postponed till Tuesday next week.
***Remember to bring in signed quizzes tomorrow. You MAY wear dress down clothes on Friday if you like.

Homework for Jan. 12th
Math - Answer workbook pp, 105 and 106.
Social Studies -  On loose leaf write a full heading. Answer p. 30 in the SS workbook. Write out the definition for each (do NOT just put the number and letter). Study pp.112, 113, and 114 in textbook for Social Studies on Tuesday! Be sure to study vocabulary on p. 112 and ALL skills on pp. 113,114.
***Please remember that MAP testing will be on Wed. and Thurs. next week.  I strongly suggest that students practice Math skills  and read ELA articles in www.student.frontrowed.com to prepare for this test.
***If possible I would appreciate if  each student could have a dry erase eraser ( also called whiteboard erasers) to wipe off their personal white boards.  We use the boards daily and it would be a great convenience.  You can buy them at Staples or perhaps even Dollar Tree store.  Also please have students tape in any pages that are falling out of their Math books.  Thank you!

Homework for Class 1-2 for Jan. 3 to 5

Dear Parents,
         I want to thank you very much for your thoughtfulness and generosity at Christmas time.  I also want to thank you for your support  and cooperation in having your children work on the front row website as I suggested.  I received a very positive and encouraging e mail notice about the exceptional amount of work your children did especially on the ELA articles during the vacation and I am very happy to share this good news with you!!!  If for whatever reason your child forgot to bring in their written homework from the three leveled readers from the pearsonrealize web site, please send it in by tomorrow!  On Friday I will send home a set of quizzes (including this week's Math quiz) to be signed and returned on Monday.

Homework for Jan. 3
Phonics- Do pp. 88, 89, 90.  Follow directions on each page.
Math-  Quiz is tomorrow. Study all workbook pages and corrected exit tickets for Lessons 16 through 21 in folder.
Religion - In Reflections book answer p. 3 including picture and completed sentence NEATLY!!!

***When I checked my pearsonrealize dashboard, I noticed that SIX students had not worked on Pack Up Skills and THREE had not worked on Monster Mania during the vacation.  The assignment is extended till tomorrow evening so that these students are able to work on these  assignments before time is up! Please make sure your children complete at least some activities in each!
Next week I will be working on a Science article and a Social Studies article on the frontrowed web site. They have already been assigned in case you want to see them.

Homework for Jan. 4
HAPPY SNOW DAY!!!
Stuck at home?  Isn't this just the perfect day to catch up on that uncompleted vacation homework that I mentioned above (on Jan.3 homework)?  I will be checking!!!
Math quiz will be given tomorrow.

Homework for Jan. 5
Phonics: Do pp. 91, 92, and 93.  Follow directions on each page.
SS and Science:   On student.frontrowed.com three articles have been assigned in Science and two articles in Social Studies to be studied for quizzes next week.  Look for class code on index card in child's folder and click on assignments (hen circle) to see these listed.  For Science study What is Weather? and Natural Disasters .  For Social Studies study What is Geography? and Continents, Countries, States, and Cities.  BE SURE TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ON LINE FOR ALL FOUR OF THESE ARTICLES.  I will check them Sunday night. Even if you were absent on Friday you can still do this work!
***Progress Reports were distributed today.  They should be signed and returned on Monday.
***Corrected quizzes will also need to be distributed on Monday since some students were absent for the Math quiz due to the weather.
